I guess a rom can be reproduced, but if you have access to a vic-1001 keyboard, then you would have to already own a vic-1001. It doesn't seem very easy to reproduce that part.
I'm thinking of putting a switchable PETSCII/Katakana (VIC-1001) Character ROM in my VIC for the fun of it. Won't be the same as the real thing of course, but will be fun to see what the character set looks like.
Oh! I inverted your statement. Your idea seems much more likely than what I was thinking. Still, the 1001 already has a "romanji" alphabet. Such an owner, i think, would only want to replace the rom, not the keyboard.
Or perhaps install some daughter board with switches. If I understand correctly, half of the graphic symbols are not present on the 1001 keyboard, or does each key have up to four symbols on it?
G'day, Victragic! You are not alone down here in Australia. I live in Melbourne and am a retro fanatic - especially Commodore! Anyway, the day after I bought a VIC on eBay (in its original box, no less) for around $80, one sold for only $25 (in the box). Great thing was, however, I was able to pick up my new baby locally and the seller threw in all the carts that he was planning to sell separately! So now I have an instant library of great games on cassette and cart - including the AWESOME Gridrunner! If anyone is interested in setting up an AUSTRALIAN VIC club let me know. A great oportunity to maybe trade and swap stuff and a good VIC yarn!
Seeya, mates!
