Getting more members
not the rigth strategy
Honestly, one of the problems with this site is the fact you have to register just to READ it. A lot of people avoid here because of that.
finding ways to delete members is not the solution.

That was originally a way to dissuade spammers. As was mentioned, it is easy to tell who is real and who is just spamming (or usually just here promoting a www) by whether or not they log in.dragos wrote:Honestly, one of the problems with this site is the fact you have to register just to READ it. Couldn't you disable guest posting, but allow guests to read all the sub-forums?Jeff-20 wrote:That was originally a way to dissuade spammers. As was mentioned, it is easy to tell who is real and who is just spamming (or usually just here promoting a www) by whether or not they log in.
The current setup doesn't bother me at all, I login to make it easy to find new posts anyway.
I don't see the problem with a big number of one-time users, as long as they don't consume valueable resources (hard disk space etc). Just keep the number of link referral spammer accounts down - those who register just to specify some irrelevant web page and get a link referral from Denial. Posting spam on the forum has no function since it is read protected from guests and search spiders.

I think dragos meant for people who want to check out the forum for the very first time. If they're immediately presented with a login/registration screen, they may groan "oh not another one" and go away.Jeff-20 wrote:I thought everyone logged in to distiguish new posts from old. I am willing to listen to any other problems and take suggestions.
I also recommend allowing guests read-only access, just so newcomers can read and see if they want to join.
I must admit that the first time I visited Denial (on Schema's recommendation) I was intending to have a quick look around and was turned off by having to register. I thought it odd to register before knowing if there was anything of interest in the forum. Regrettably I ended up saying, "to heck with it" and going onto something else. Another thing is that requiring registration is less than ideal for people who aren't into forums but want to quickly find answers to questions. I think the forum should be wide open for viewing and posting should require registration. That's the setup that I find most inviting and practical.
P.S. I'm quite glad I finally joined.

In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.
Re: problems
I don't think we've had any of those threads here, so maybe the current setup is perfect for keeping the riff-raff outdragos wrote:(though, one more i buried a floppy or what if commodore had done ....., an i may throw up)
Now I remember why!!
I checked the "who's online" and have 16 IP addresses currently using the forum... I don't know what they are (bots?), but activity shows they are currently "posting messages"... If you look at the front page, the most users we've had at once was 45 on July 2005... an impossible number, but at the time I had two sections freely open.
SOme of you may recall we had some strange events during that time. The board was shut down several times in a row. Boray had to set up an alternate forum, and brad had to install some mods for me. I suspected the open forums were the problem, so as a test, I closed all but General. The problem went away. I figured the inconvenience to new comers was worth having a more reliable forum for memebers.
I will open all the sections if an explaination/solution for these "ghosts" are found. Until then, this may be a haunted forum, and we're all wearing garlic (sorry, I just played "The Count")
