My VIC resets when I turn on my disk-drive

Post by ral-clan »

Hi, most of the time when I turn on my 1540 disk drive my VIC-20 either does a soft reset, or it locks (the cursor stops flashing). Has anyone ever seen this behaviour? I'm wondering if it's somehow because they are both plugged into the same power bar/surge protector?

Strange.

At the moment I just have to try and avoid turning my VIC1540 on when my VIC is on.

Sounds like reset line from 1540 is being held low.

If you power up 1540 first and then Vic-20, does Vic-20 come up ok?

i don't know which components you are supposed to turn on first, but i have found that if i turn on the vic last, everything goes smoothly.

if i turn on the printer or the drive last, things go screwy.

As a side note, I observed that my original revision VIC-20:s send a reset (?) signal on the IEC bus when you turn it off, as well as when you turn it on. I tried a CR revision, and it did not send a signal on power off, just like the C64 doesn't.

If you press the reset button on one of my blue utility cartridges, the drives reset too. This happens even if the VIC is off!

Yes, it does come up okay. The reason, though, that I don't always have my 1540 on is that the original 1540s run very hot. Lately, I've put a fan on it, so it runs nice and cool, but now I leave it off to avoid the fan noise (until I need to use the drive).

I should mention that about 1 in 10 times the VIC *won't* be affected by the 1540 coming on.
