I'm struggling with ways to combine a user port edge connector's 3.96mm hole pitch with PCB prototype board, which have 2.54mm hole pitch.
My current plan is to use a 14-conductor ribbon cable with 2.54mm pitch to make the electronic connections, and then solder the PCB to unused pins on the edge connector in three or four places to make it stable.
In February I bought a user port prototyping board on ebay that's pretty much exactly what I need, but I can't find them anywhere anymore. It's a 22-pin edge connector soldered to a 2.54mm hole pitch board. I could use a whole bunch of these.
Tomorrow, I may have to tear apart my VICModem for some ideas, but I wanted to see if anyone has any thoughts on how a sturdy user port peripheral can be constructed.

I use this to prototype with a breadboard, but you could solder sockets to your board and plug them in instead
Re: Hole Pitches
yes, I was after something like that but couldn't find anything. Closest I came across were Jamma adapter boards, but obviously too many pins.
Re: Hole Pitches
shouldn't be that difficult to produce some Gerber files I wouldn't imagine so these could be sent for runs at PCBWay or similar

Re: Hole Pitches
Is that a rope on there for pulling the thing out of the VIC? I've got a similar cable/connector thing, but getting it out is a pain.
Gerber files are something I know nothing about making, but I would like to learn.
I tried soldering the top pins of the connector to the PCB, but it didn't hold very well. I might try screwing the connector to a project box. That would probably be a sturdier connection that just solder.

Another option available if you have access to a 3d printer are the various open source connector enclosures.

Thanks for the link! I may print one of those up this weekend and see if I can work out the logistics.beamrider wrote: ↑Fri Sep 24, 2021 1:57 am Another option available if you have access to a 3d printer are the various open source connector enclosures.
