Joystick for macOS and VICE

You need an actual VIC.

Joystick for macOS and VICE

Post by chysn »

Can anybody recommend a specific joystick that I can plug into my USB port and use with VICE under macOS (Mojave) on a 2015 MacBook Pro?

I'm getting weary of setting up the keyboard joystick and then un-setting it up when I want to use keys.

I have one of these:
https://www.retronicdesign.com/en/

It's an adaptor that allows you to use a 9-pin joystick in a USB port. I've used it on Linux Mint and Ubuntu, Windows XP and with the Raspberry Pi and the description says it's compatible with Mac. It works with pretty much every 9-pin I've tried; Competition Pro, Zipstick, Mindscape Powerplayer (my personal favourite), Konix Speedking, Wico Boss, Atari CX-40 and Commodore 1311.

If you have some old joysticks available, this solution might be for you.

That's a great idea, and I certainly have some old joysticks around. I also have approximately one million Arduinos, so I may be able to migrate this concept a bit with the HID Library.

Just an update on this resolution, if anyone's in the same boat in the future.

The short story is that my VICE was too old. I updated to VICE 3.5. In this version, the menus are the normal macOS type, not driven by function keys. Go to Settings > Setting > Input Devices > Joystick, and the connected USB joystick should appear in the "Joystick" and "Userport Joystick #1" drop-downs. Set both of these, and the USB joystick will work as expected.

Update: The joystick needs to be plugged in when VICE is started in order to be recognized.
