SD2IEC VIC 20 DEVICE NOT PRESENT
Hi,
When I connect my SD2IEC to my Vic 20, and attempt to load the file browser, a message "Device Not Present" is displayed.
Anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this error.
Thanks

Perhaps the SD2IEC is configured for a different device number? Have you tried 8, 9, 10, 11?

Re: SD2IEC VIC 20 DEVICE NOT PRESENT
When I got that message with my SD2IEC, I wound up having to swap out my 6522s. I'm not saying "jump right to blaming the VIC-20," I'm just saying that's what my situation happened to require.

Thanks for the advice.
I have tried different port numbers and I still get the same error message.
Also if I do need to replace a chip, where do I purchase replacement a from ?
Thanks

Re: SD2IEC VIC 20 DEVICE NOT PRESENT
Have you got a C64 to try it on? That would at least show it works at all.
Also, are you definitely running the correct file browser file? I think the one called FB is the one that detects the correct one, and if that is the first file in the directory you can just do the usual LOAD "*",8 but if you have put them in a different order you might be loading a PET one, or C64, etc. You can just load the correct Vic-20 one manually to make sure (different ones for different RAM amounts).

Do you have either another serial device (disk drive, printer) or another Commodore computer? The first task is to determine which item is not working.
Re: SD2IEC VIC 20 DEVICE NOT PRESENT
Hi,
I have tried the SD2IEC on a C64 and it works OK.
Also, I don't have any peripherals that use the serial port to test the serial port is working OK.
Is my only option a diagnostic cartridge ?
Thanks

That confirms the issue is with the VIC then. There are two likely causes, either the VIA or the line buffer. Does your VIC-20 have socketed chips or are they soldered in?
Re: SD2IEC VIC 20 DEVICE NOT PRESENT
Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
My Vic 20 has socketed chips.
I've also read that the 7406 logic chip can also cause this error, is that correct ?

Great. Try swapping the two VIAs around. Ground yourself first if you don't have an anti-static mat and take care not to bend the pins.
Yes, if the keyboard continues to function and the serial still doesn't work doesn't the buffer chip is faulty. If some keys stop working it's the VIA.I've also read that the 7406 logic chip can also cause this error, is that correct ?

Re: SD2IEC VIC 20 DEVICE NOT PRESENT
I had this issue in my Vic-20. I managed to salvage a spare from my parts C128 board and got it working again.
Re: SD2IEC VIC 20 DEVICE NOT PRESENT
I had a similar issue, some times it worked fine and other times id get the same message.
The SD card wasn't always fully in, so check that first. It not always obvious thats its not fully in the slot.
It may or may not be the same problem. It was happening because i was taking it from one VIC to another all the time.

Re: SD2IEC VIC 20 DEVICE NOT PRESENT
I have this issue with one of my VICs, loads from tape but not from disk (bad 7406 I understand).
Also somehow I saved a file into some kind of memory inside the SD2IEC instead of the SD card. I think it shows up when I load the directory with no SD card inserted.
