Maze of Mikor

Post by chysn »

Has anybody ever heard of Maze of Mikor for VIC-20? More importantly, does anybody have Maze of Mikor for VIC-20?

This was a H.E.S. tape release, but it's not available at any of the usual tape locations. It's hard to find anybody who's even heard of it. I don't believe I haven't asked about it on Denial yet.

It was sort of a cave exploration game. I liked it a lot when I was a kid.

Thought I had it in GB20 but evidently not, one of those I've seen for sale but not been able to buy (stupid high asking prices probably) to transfer.

Not many unique references on archive.org:

Compusense ad, Commander v1#2:

Code: Select all

adventure-packed game with stunning graphics
Midnite Software Gazette #9, review:

Code: Select all

MAZE OF MIKOR , by Gunter Koch. $18 cassette from HES. Joystick required.

REVIEW #1 : MAZE has 3 levels. Good graphics and sound. Instructions are
good, but quite lengthy and take a long time to view. Hard to tell which
direction rifle is pointing. Fairly easy to play for any age group.-LW

REVIEW #2 : It has a lot of instructions which are difficult to understand.
Otherwise, it has very good graphics and I enjoyed the game.-CW
Skylight Software ad, Commander v1#6:

Code: Select all

Steal Warlocks Gold - Evade Demon
Couldn't find any screenshots :(

As a kid, I kept an eye out for Günter Koch games by H.E.S., because they were reliably good. Maze of Mikor must not have been a big seller, or maybe it came along too late in the VIC-20's life cycle. I do remember that it was relatively complex, as the reviews say. It's kind of surprising how little info there is about it, given that it's a H.E.S. game.

I've got an ebay alert saved for it, so hopefully I'll find a copy some day.

I very much appreciate you tracking that down. Right now I'm in the "deliberation phase." The shipping is $11 extra, which seems ludicrous, for a cassette. Medium flat-rate box? Sheesh. Some things hold up under the microscope of nostalgia (e.g., Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), and some things don't (e.g., MacGyver). I don't yet know which category Maze of Mikor falls into, so the price is a bit steep.

I think that Maze of Mikor is what is now called a "roguelike" game. Perhaps I'd be better off just making a roguelike game my next project.

There's always room for another Roguelike on the VIC!
I love seeing the varying takes on graphics and gameplay.

Buy it if you remember it being good - sounds like the author at HES was good.

Archive it for this community

Play it & learn from it?

Build a new next version.

Community gets 2 games!

I will put some $ in if the game is that good.

Thing is, I was 12. I thought a lot of bad things were good. :D

It's likely that I'll play the long game and wait for another copy. If I ever get my hands on a copy, I'll definitely archive it for the community.

Cool - it is archived under Quest

http://zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/vic2 ... /Quest.prg

Download and then drag and drop here

https://nippur72.github.io/vic20-emu/

and type run to get back to being 12.

Type list for sourcecode LOL :D

Quest! That's great, thank you!

I wonder whether the name was changed from Quest or to Quest.

I don't know if Quest was the European original and Maze of Mikor was the USA name but HES used to change UK game names and release in the US.

Matrix (edit - thanks Mayhem) on tape cassette in UK by author Jeff Minter / Llamasoft
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35KwX1NmKXo

(Gridrunner was released as Gridrunner cart by HES)

aka

Attack of the Mutant Camels Cartridge released in USA by H.E.S

Confusingly this is not the same game as the C64 classic - Attack of the Mutant Camels

Also Andes Attack (for a short time known also as Defenda) on tape cassette in UK by author Jeff Minter / Llamasoft

aka

Aggressor - Cartridge released in USA by H.E.S

Looks like it is all BASIC.
Amazing that they were charging $18 for that in 1983.
