TheC64 to include a VIC-20 mode

Post by norm8332 »

I don't know if it will support memory expansions. But this is interesting...

Now this is great news about my next Christmas self-gift :)
But...
The machine is already available for pre-order through X in the UK, Amazon in Germany and Gamestop in Italy
I searched for it in the Italian website, but nothing comes up :? .

It's always good to hear about the VIC getting more public attention. My friend will be particularly excited about this because one of his pet peeves about the C64 is that it isn't backwards compatible with the VIC-20. He wanted a working keyboard and he's going to be delighted with the news that a 37 year old wrong has been righted as well.

Me, I'm still on the fence. I'm happy enough with the original hardware for both systems and if I want emulators I'll use Vice. The only minis I've signed up for are for the Mega Drive and the PC Engine. The first for reasons of nostalgia; the second for an affordable and accessible way to explore the system.

I really wonder how this will affect our scene. Will there be more interest in new software development? I'm really eager to get one either way. I hope there are after market stickers to make mine "ALWAYS vic mode".

I'm waiting for the new C64 with a sense of mature and responsible aloofness

It sounds like the new machine will use software emulation rather than hardware. I guess that this shouldn't matter, but somehow it does.

We'll see how it will stand compared to the original. Software emulation can be very good, if indistinguishable from a real C64 (at least for the profane). I am more concerned about the feel of the keyboard, and plastics - weight, robustness, responsiveness to touch typing, etc.

this device is nothing more than a cheap allwinner board running VICE :)
