I'd like to spend some time expanding and improving the wiki entries, I think it's a good way of storing the detailed knowledge we've built up on Denial.
Wikis work best where there is some consistency in structure and layout. Naming of articles is a bit random, some have the 'part' number, e.g. http://sleepingelephant.com/denial/wiki ... ar_Ratrace and others don't, http://sleepingelephant.com/denial/wiki ... c_Cruncher. Including the number makes names rather long and clunky, but for some items, e.g. the 16K RAM cartridge, something is needed to disambiguate the CBM one from more generic ones.
I'd like to propose removing the number from the article name, then where necessary add a suffix like '(CBM)'. We can then have redirects from the number, or any combination of number and title. This means that we can have one entry for say, Super Expander, which covers the three variants rather than having three rather short separate ones.
I've been editing articles on wikipedia for a long time, but I don't want to impose their conventions here unnecessarily.

I like your proposal! ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Re: More wiki questions
I agree with your proposal as well. I like things when they are consistently organized like that. As you probably no, though, if you are removing the part number from the title, it should appear somewhere else in the article.
Another option would be to organize by game title, with part number following i.e.
Cosmic Cruncher (VIC-1024)
I'm just making that number up because I don't remember the actual number.

Re: More wiki questions
I was going to include it in an infobox, like I have with http://sleepingelephant.com/denial/wiki ... _cartridgeral-clan wrote:I agree with your proposal as well. Re: More wiki questions
I like the infobox option.
I wonder if there can be a template or something like an instruction sheet on the Wiki to make stylistic conformity easier for Wiki authors.

Re: More wiki questions
To properly implement infoboxes requires an extension, I've just used raw templates to achieve much the same effect.ral-clan wrote: I wonder if there can be a template or something like an instruction sheet on the Wiki to make stylistic conformity easier for Wiki authors.
I've updated and expanded http://sleepingelephant.com/denial/wiki ... n_II_Chess let me know what you think.
Re: More wiki questions
I like it - and the tan colour of the infobox. The only thing I'm wondering if a field specifying the media type should be in the infobox:
i.e.
Media: cartridge, cassette, disk
I see you've included that information in the article text, but it's a little harder to instantly find there in a long article.

Re: More wiki questions
How about a little logo: tape or cartridge?ral-clan wrote:The only thing I'm wondering if a field specifying the media type should be in the infobox
Re: More wiki questions
I like little logos, but is it going to be easy for anyone else to implement? I'm just thinking it should be easy for the novice to put together an article that complies with the look of the rest.

Re: More wiki questions
Once the logo is uploaded you just copy the template into an article, e.g. addingral-clan wrote:I like little logos, but is it going to be easy for anyone else to implement? I'm just thinking it should be easy for the novice to put together an article that complies with the look of the rest.
Code: Select all
{{Commodore game cartridge|title=my title|...}}
Re: More wiki questions
I guess I have no objection as long as it's fairly clear to all what the logos represent.

Re: More wiki questions
As an alternative to symbols in gif pictures, there are a lot available in unicode now.
https://unicode-table.com/en/#1F5AC
: Soft Shell Floppy Disk, Unicode number: U+1F5AC, HTML-code: 🖬.
: Tape Cartridge, Unicode number: U+1F5AD, HTML-code: 🖭 (I haven't found one that looks like an audio cassette).
: Books, Unicode number: U+1F4DA, HTML-code: 📚.
: Folder, Unicode number: U+1F5C0, HTML-code: 🗀.
: Old Personal Computer, Unicode number: U+1F5B3, HTML-code: 🖳.
: Printer Icon, Unicode number: U+1F5B6, HTML-code: 🖶.
: Wired Keyboard, Unicode number: U+1F5AE, HTML-code: 🖮.
: Cheese Wedge, Unicode number: U+1F9C0, HTML-code: 🧀.
(I had to remove the actual symbols in this post because the bulletin board told me "Your message contains the following unsupported characters:..." - I hope the wiki does support UTF-8.)

Re: More wiki questions
I tried these on my own wiki but they didn't render properly.
Re: More wiki questions
I've added my attempt at a cartridge logo to the Sargon article, someone with more artistic skill is welcome to improve it.
Re: More wiki questions
Yeah, I think I overestimated unicode support in forums and wikis. Thanks for testing.srowe wrote:I tried these on my own wiki but they didn't render properly.
