Name: Defense Shield
Author: Dr.Geek
Released: August 31st, 2018
Genre: Arcade game
Coded On: PCVIC Emulator on DosBox 0.74
Requirements: Unexpanded VIC-20
Here is my first release, Defense Shield. It's time to save the Earth again. The game was created during a wet and cold afternoon in about 3 hours. Unexpanded VIC-20, keyboard play and Petscii graphics. Full instructions are in the game. My best score so far is 741 making it to Wave 11.

Re: New Release: Defense Shield
Just gave it a go. I got 293.
I'm still trying to work out whether you coded this in BASIC or machine language. The graphics seem simplistic enough for BASIC but the sprite movement seems fast enough for machine code.
I was intrigued by the notion of a game being developed on an emulator within an emulator. Any particular reason why you chose to do that instead of using VICE?

The LIST command is sometimes useful to settle that question.English Invader wrote:I'm still trying to work out whether you coded this in BASIC or machine language.
Neither of those two features are a qualifying hint what language was used to implement the game. If you take TRON (my 2004 remake) from my games collection, it is similarly fast *and* it has user defined graphics. And it is written in 100% BASIC.The graphics seem simplistic enough for BASIC but the sprite movement seems fast enough for machine code.
I have a similar workflow (using an emulator chain, though with a fairly recent version of VICE -- PCVIC would be too grossly inaccurate to cover my needs). Old habits die slowly, I guess.I was intrigued by the notion of a game being developed on an emulator within an emulator. Any particular reason why you chose to do that instead of using VICE?
Re: New Release: Defense Shield
All coded in BASIC - I try to keep the main game loop very short and try to avoid if-then's by using boolean logic and on-...goto's
I used PCVIC as it was a favorite long before I had even heard of VICE. and to use it on windows needs DosBox
Edit:- NEW HIGH SCORE ...... 845 on Wave 12!!!
Just for fun, I decided to add a nice retro Cassette Inlay.

Not quite as good a score for me, noticed this wasn't in the announce thread.
