How many commercial games were made for the Vic-20?

Post by Kakemoms »

I though most games were on some kind of list and that they were also available as download.

It may be that they are, but after making one list (from two I downloaded on the net: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_C ... C-20_games and http://www.digitpress.com/video-game-guide/), there seems to be many more.

I.e. I have been scanning through ebay Vic-20 games, and after going through about about 50 titles, 30 were not on the list (?!?!).

So it looks like there is no complete list of Vic-20 games. Or am I wrong? I have about 450 commercially released games on my list... and adding as I type.

I will also go through this site: http://www.uber-leet.com/Commodore_VIC_ ... php?show=A which has 1770 files.. although many "duplicates" (e.g. 2-5 files for the same game).

It's a list that's growing all the time. Back in the early 80s, any kid who learned to program could get a Pac-Man or Frogger clone released on tape by the hundreds of small software houses that were around and games that we didn't know about before just keep turning up on eBay.

Not really. The commercial games that were written in 1981-1985 are not becoming more abundant. Very few new ones seems to be found, so that's why I were surprised to see that there wasn't a single list to show them all. I have now added elements from a third list to get a more complete list, but still I have found some games that were not on the three lists. There is a fourth list that seems to be more complete.

I will post the complete list here once I finish it.

Having obviously handled GB20 for many years, I'd say the number of commercial titles released between 1980-1986 was at least 1000... there are a lot of type-ins and similar in the database as well. But there's almost 200 cartridges for starters, and the biggest Vic20 tape collection I know has over 700 unique tapes, so... not much of a push to say at least four figures.

Have you checked the list on the Denial Wiki? It's incomplete, but might have more titles.
Also, you seem like the perfect person to update the WIKI page with your new list. That might be a more appropriate and permanent place for your list than a forum thread.

Its very incomplete and has only a few commercial titles.. but there were a few that I could add. Thanks!

The best way to find new titles has been to manually search through ebay. I've found a dozen titles that way. It doesn't mean they are rare, only that the lists I have seen through are not very complete.

Currently I have 519 unique commercial games on my list. I still have to add alot to get a complete one..

Its certainly not complete and some bugs there are, but here is an updated Vic-20 software list with 850 titles:
Vic20GamesList-20181028.zip
(31.9 KiB) Downloaded 737 times
I have tried to mark non-game programs as Utility or Educational. Obviously its missing a lot of entries as I have tested only a few.

The list is composed of commercially available games or programs that were sold on tape or cartridge. I only know of one program that was distributed on floppy.

The list is in LibreOffice format. If you don't have LibreOffice, download it for free..

There are a lot of titles not on the list yet. Some indicate that there are at least 1000 more commercial titles (excluding magazine type-ins and magazine tapes). Some titles were resold under different titles in Italy or Spain, probably unlicensed (like Matrix from Lamasoft). I remember bying some tapes as part of magazines in Italy that were commercial titles with different names. Unfortunately all these tapes are gone (I sold my Vic-20 in 1985).

The few duplicates that remain on the list are there for a reason. E.g. because they are two different games/programs or because I don't really know if they are two or one. Usually they have different Publishers, which in some instances mean that they are the same game, but not all. I will update the list as I go along and fix such bugs.

I would like to have a database with all the tape covers as picture files. Its too much work for one person, so a better way might be to put up a ftp site for people to upload them.
