WANTED: VIC-20 Shift-Lock Mechanism

Post by TheMightyMadman »

Hi all,

I'm desperately looking for a Commodore 64 shift-lock mechanism with a round barrel, which I believe is the same as the one on most VIC-20s (they used VIC-20 style keyboards for both early and late 64s). It's all-black and should have two long wires coming out the back of it. It will come from a keyboard that doesn't have springs underneath the keys, and has rubber plungers on the PCB instead. I've been looking for one for ages but I haven't had any luck so far, so if anyone happens to have a spare they'd be willing to sell I'd appreciate it!

This detail or the photo you provided helps very little in knowing what type of keyboard you have.

There are generally 3 types of keyboard equipping VIC-20s. They are easiest to identify with the typeface used. The difference is most obvious on the 'SHIFT' keys.
Be normal.

Very well spotted, thank you! I've messaged them, hopefully it's still available. I appreciate it :-)

The picture may not be helpful in terms of the keyboard, but it is for the mechanism itself. I guess the description is more suited to 64 keybaords, but it still applies. I figured that most people who would know the kind of VIC-20 keyboards would know the kind of VIC-20 shift-lock mechanisms too. Also, having a spare lying around you're not going to necessarily know what kind of keyboard it came from. Out of interest, are the typefaces guaranteed to be standard between the types, if that makes sense?

This comment does not help me identify which type of keyboard you have.
3 types of keyboards for the VIC-20
3 types of keyboards for the VIC-20
I'm not going to disassemble my keyboards to know which one has your specific shift lock switch.

What you should do is post a photo of one of your SHIFT keys.
Be normal.

For the record, here is a picture of the keyboard in question, which matches the top keyboard style in your picture.
