C64 Wiki fast loaders compare help!
There is a nice page about fastloaders performance on the C64 Wiki here:
https://www.c64-wiki.com/index.php?titl ... st_loaders
Unfortunately, it contains incomplete/inaccurate information concerning the Super Snapshot V4 and V5.
I tried to edit the page and it asked for a specific technical information but systematically refused it and now it says I must wait a few minutes before retrying... that was 2 hours ago.
Can anyone here having an account on this Wiki enter some information/corrections on that page please ?
The real 1541 format time with the SSV4 and V5 fast format command (@FN0:) is 35 seconds or 2.14 times faster than Commodore's normal format.
Also, I will check the performance of these cartridges with the 1581 drive. This information is simply not present on that page.

but you realise the table shows values resulting from regular dos commands (sent by OPEN)?

Yes... what else am I supposed to use ?groepaz wrote:but you realise the table shows values resulting from regular dos commands (sent by OPEN)?
In the case of SSV4 and SSV5, to use the accelerated formatting, you use exactly the same command as regular DOS but you just have to add 'F' in front of the N0: command.
OPEN15,8,15,"FN0:diskname,ID"
Or with the DOS wedge:
@FN0:diskname,ID
Be normal.
Re: C64 Wiki fast loaders compare help!
just like AR, SS redirects certain commands when using the wedge - and they do NOT work with regular OPEN (and why would they, the drive doesnt know about them). try it yourself:
Code: Select all
open1,8,15,"fn0:bla,00":close1
ready.

I am the one who added those, and this resource is specifically for listing what the 64'er speedtest.prg generates. By changing those, now you've skewed the data and it's no longer accurate.
If you want another reference that is more technical or with a new speed test methodology (like LordCrass has done on a thread on Lemon64) you should create one.

My bad... sorry.r.cade wrote:I am the one who added those, and this resource is specifically for listing what the 64'er speedtest.prg generates. By changing those, now you've skewed the data and it's no longer accurate.
This software is not directly linked anywhere on the Wiki's page and the related Forum64 thread is all in german.
This benchmark page does not include performances with SSV4/SSV5 and a 1581 drive.
If I have access to the software you mention then I could make a contribution to this page with accurate data this time.
Do you think it would be a good idea to mention in the comment section that it is possible with SSV4/V5 to have a much faster disk formatting by using the '@FN0:' command ?

Re: C64 Wiki fast loaders compare help!
Sure, nothing wrong with that at all. It is a wiki- you could create another section specifically with another test besides the 64'er speedtest.
I will dig up the speedtest.prg and link it here...
