PAL VIC-20 Paper Badge

Post by mrr19121970 »

I have a PAL VIC-20 with a "paper badge". The case is filthy and yellowed. I would like to clean it up. I know that the metal badges I have to remove (either heating with a hair dryer, or freezing off). What about the paper badge? I guess it won't come off (and be reusable). Is it really paper, and will get wrecked with water?

Does anyone have any experience with this? Tips please.

I am hoping still that someone can comment on this, I don't want to put the case in the dishwasher and ruin it.

With paper-badge you mean those rainbow colored VIC typo ones, right?

I clean a few one of those VICs never had problems with badges affected by the water.
But(!!):
I never put any of my VIC cases into a dishwasher.
I cleaned them by hand, softly with a wet cloth first. Then I use those so-called 'dirtrubbers' (it's the german phrase for those type of sponges, don't know the correct name in anlgo-speaking countries) to get all those persitent dirt and coloring off of the cases' shelfs. Of course yellowing due to aging will not come off, but yellowing due to smoking is erasable very well with those sponges.
With retr-o-brighting I have no experience (yet). But there I expect possible issues with those paper badges.

I will try it this weekend. My wife is getting suspicious. Now she knows I know where the dishwasher is and also how to use it. This might cause longterm problems for me :P

This weekend should be sunny, so good for retr0brighting. Check this out, 1000ml is more than enough BTW for about 15 machines.

Actually it started with the hoover to suck all the leaves and spiders out of the case, next was ironing (my wife knows I used the soldering iron). I guess I am now doomed.

So inside my 'paper label' case, I found a small adhesive 'dot' stuck next to the LED. I guess this is the punch out of the POWER badge. I am not really sure it is paper it is more plastic and is 0.23mm thick. The case is in the dishwasher now, and the label has survived the prewash. The label anyway was not 100% correctly aligned, so I wonder if the glue will survive the 55 degrees C cycle. I will update tomorrow...

Update

Sure, no issues with the 'paper label'

I cleaned a 2nd 'paper label' VIC20 today. The previous one was a CR version, this was the 9 volt type. The lables were very different. This one today way alot thinner vinyl and when I removed I even wondered how will I get it back on (and not look crap). I've decided to get some printed and cut, anyway I wanted to order some more Behr-Bonz labels.

If anyone else wants to do this here is the curves file.
