Best way to share a collection (virtually)

Post by rgrocha »

Hi,

I'm now in the process of catalog my VIC20 collection.
I'd like to (if not already done, of course) scan all manuals & boxes, taking nice pictures of hardware, making dumps of tapes, carts and disks.

What do you think is the best way to share that stuff with the community? The options I've thought about are:
* making my own site/blog
* adding them to the Denial Wiki (I must register there first!)
* or finding a new site elsewhere (like DLH's Commodore Archive where I've previously contributed)

Thank you !

I am glad you will share your vic collection :D

My advice is to spread these fine collections to as many sites as possible, even keep a hard copy safe at home.
As the years go by, people are getting rather old, and loosing interest or die, then sites with nice material are gone for ever.
Kind regards, Peter.

Of course if you have anything that is not in Gamebase20, then obviously I'd like it to include :)

Great, I'll upload them everywhere :)
Btw, can we put formated pages on the wiki, like Wikipedia does, for example, on country pages? It could be nice to have every game one one like that.

I'll create a new thread once I start scanning for updates with links to the wiki pages.

Funny, I have been thinking along the same lines. I've spent too much money in 2014 purchasing bits and pieces (nothing too expensive or rare) and have been thinking for a while that I should find a way to share and document what I have.

Having blogged before I was heading in that direction, some combination of a virtual museum, a personal blog and a review site, but I keep putting it off due to lack of time, maybe 2015 will be the year it sees the light of day.

I shall watch with interest your efforts and look forward to seeing some cool stuff :)

The rationale should be to upload not all your collection, but only undocumented material, be it a book, a manual, game instructions, or tape / cart dumps. If I can suggest, please drop here a comprehensive list of all your stuff, then you will be asked to preserve the unpublished gems :) .
There are many repositories around, and I guess most of us here already have hardcopies which, if put together, represent the whole treasure.

I think i've not any lost gem or anything rare, but I see, for example, not all game boxes are scanned, or are complete (front and back).

Other thing I've not found anywhere are the own computer full box scans.

I'll list here all my stuff later this week (next year [emoji1]).

Not that long ago, OK it was quite a while ago. There was a group called the Vic Café that was ultimately trying to produce a comprehensive CD with ALL the games and scans of Vic games and some HTML to join it all together (it is still funny to me that the scans would take considerable more room than the actual programs). Ultimately it fell apart because another group was doing the same thing and were further along. As far as I know neither group finished this. So while I think it would be awesome to have Vic programs ubiquitous and perpetuating the internet, it is more work and is very likely not to get done.

As far as I can tell, Mayhem's GB20 is the most comprehensive and widely available file, and this , I think, is where efforts should be concentrated. If the files are already included in GB20 and you have the time (or money if it's a web site) then most certainly upload, perpetuate, flourish.

One last note on the Vic Café, it soon led me to Denial, which from the dying ashes of Geocities, would start a forum.

I somewhat remember Vic Cafe, I think I was going to use that as a basis for anything missing in GB20 in the very early days, but then it vanished.

So Denial's online presence actually came before cafe vic. This year will be 20 years since the Denial fanzine started. We should do an anniversary issue and share it online as a printable pdf or something. Haha

Jeff - you need a 20/20 Vision collection. ;-)

Maybe also a retrospective trawl of the postings for a top 100 posts folks think all Vic owners should read with different criteria e.g. interesting, novel, game tip, collecting info, repair, pokes, Megacart, Final Expansion 3, vapourware etc.
