If the "Play Game" button is greyed out, then there is no direct PRG associated with the entry. This will generally mean (assuming there is a screenshot with the entry) that it is a cartridge or tape image instead. These will be under the "Extras" button.

As for the error message, read further down the INSTALL.TXT file into the troubleshooting section ;)

I am puzzled how to actually install this. I don't see any executables in the download database zip file, so I installed gamebase 1.3. But in 'gamebase toolbox' (which is apparently the database setup program) I don't see any way to import the Vic20_v03.mdb? I am missing something, help!

The instructions are in the INSTALL.TXT file. The Vic20_v03 directory should be decompressed as a subfolder of the main Gamebase directory.

ie. if you have the Gamebase frontend installed as C:\Gamebase, then it should be placed as C:\Gamebase\Vic20_v03.

This is how when you run the Gamebase frontend, it picks up all the installed databases. The MDB filename MUST match the same name as the directory it is in btw, so you can call it anything, but they must match.

The GB64 guys do make it an EXE to click and auto install, but I've never been fussed with that, and anyone not using Windows is a little stuffed if they want to access any of the files in there.

thanks, that worked!

But unfortunately I am seeing a lot of file not found error messages, maybe half of the games (winvice 2.4). Most of the games are file not founds actually. But some do load correctly, for example 3d man loads but 3d labyrinth does not. I attached a screen capture. Any ideas? I am running 32 bit windows 8.1. the games path is this:

C:\GameBase20v3\Gamebase20_v03\Games\Games

maybe the path is too long or something

See above as someone asked the exact same question. Or read INSTALL.TXT further down ;)

I still don't get why every single prg file is zipped?

I've been using WinVice for quite some time and I have the vice.ini file set just the way I like it.
After using GameBase for a while I've noticed that GameBase has a nasty habit of modifying my vice.ini file whitout so much as warning.

So, here's how I fixed that. Luckily I had a backup of my vice.ini file.
After restoring it I then copied vice.ini to gb.ini in the WinVice folder, then I went to the GameBase\Vic20_03 folder and edited the last line of the emulators.ini file to point to gb.ini instead of vice.ini.
Now GameBase can do whatever it wants to that file, IDC!

I also did the same to GB64.

Hey, just wanted to let you know Funky Monkey and Baja 1000 are flawed in the gamebase archive. I fixed them a while ago. May have missed the thread.

Great job archiving all of these classic games. Keep it up man!!

I'm using Gamebase20 version 3 with the GameEx frontend. So in a way it's a frontend of a frontend.

Gets a little complicated but it's a dream when it all runs correctly. The problem I'm having right now is with cartridge games like "Omega Race" which are not setup to run automatically with Gamebase like other games are. Instead, you have to start Gamebase, and click on the "extras" tab in order to run the cartridge.

This of course kills my Gameex setup and those games just don't run. Any suggestions of what I can modify in my Gamebase setup to allow the Omea Race cartridge to run like a standard program instead of an "extra"?

Add the same file as a normal game in the frontend. Click the bottom left of the Gamebase frontend (where it says "none" iirc) and then pick the file. This will necessitate essentially copying the contents of the Cartridge EXTRAs folder into the GAME folder first.

Thanks for the clear instructions, Mayhem, that worked perfectly! Wow, is this ever slick. I'm curious if I will have the same luck with TAP files by using the same methods.

Also, I am using VICE 2.4 and going fullscreen. This is the only emulator I am using that won't allow "Esc" to be used to exit the application. I'm guessing that's because "Esc" is mapped to a different key on the Vic20 Keyboard. Is there an easy way to change the Keyboard mapping when using Gamebase? I wasn't able to make much sense of Keymap files in the VICE instructions.

Thanks for your assistance.

GameBase won't have any control over VICE at that point, so yeah, you'll have to look into the keyboard mapping for the emulator instead.
