Best Way to Scan Vic Literature?

Post by MicroPet »

I've got a few Vic Computing magazines, some Vicsoft catalogues and a miscellany of other bits and bobs. I'd love to get it scanned for posterity and add it (if possible) to the Denial wiki.

The thing is I don't have a decent scanner. It's one of those cheapy 3 in 1 printers from Epson so I'm not convinced it'll be worthwhile taking time to scan these things on it.

Is it possible to get them scanned without them being damaged or will I have to take them apart? Does anyone know of somebody with good equipment?

It'd be a shame if these things got lost in the ether and I'd like to do something to prevent that from happening. :)

For the magazines, you might want to check that they're not already scanned at archive.org.

These versions include OCRed text that can be used to speed up "typing in" program listings (it's not perfect but it gets you more than half way there, I've found).

You might also contact David at http://www.bombjack.org/, and check his collection of scans (it's massive).

I've looked through both sites and I can only find one issue of Vic Computing scanned at the Bombjack site and nothing at the Archive site.

I've emailed Dave (I think!) at Bombjack. Hopefully something will come of this.

I'm kind of surprised these haven't made it to the 'net yet but I suppose there's just so many old mags and books out there and the C64 and Speccy seem to get all the love!

I've got several issues of Vic Computing, hadn't gotten around to scanning them yet, I was looking to try and get the full set first. What issues do you have MicroPet? I might be interested in acquiring them if I don't have them.

TBH, I don't really want to get rid of them and would in the future like to complete the set. I know that'll take a while but, hey, I can wait. :)

Maybe between the 2 of us we could garner a full set of scans though?

I've only got a few and presume them to be the 'common' ones but here goes the list:

Volume 1 Issue 3
Issue 4
Issue 5
Issue 6

Volume 2 Issue 2
Issue 3
Issue 4
Issue 5
Issue 6

I haven't heard back from anybody regarding scanning them... Do you think Mort (Zzap64) would be worth a try?

Sadly not, I'm fairly sure I don't have issue #1.2 out of the twelve. Having a hunt through previous posts on the topic, I'm not sure anyone did. I need to go back and check which issues I do have for sure...

As for scanning, I have a scanner myself, so I can do the ones I own at least at some point...

Well, I heard back from David Haynes. He has given me a lot of useful tips and I hope to get started sometime next week. Wish me luck!
