I remember seeing the advertisement for "Quest" in COMPUTE!'s Gazette. I always wondered how it looked like. And I also remember it mentioning the 'Dungeons of Death' title.

This should be the Quest game for the C64: http://gb64.com/game.php?id=15383&d=18&h=0

As mentioned in the advertisements, it does look a lot like Wizard's Tower: http://gb64.com/game.php?id=11272&d=18&h=0

But gameplay of Quest seems more akin to Fortress of the Witch King where you buy armies at cities on the map, while Wizard's Tower is more of a single character RPG.

I'm not sure what the end goal and challenges are without the instructions, though.

Enjoy the dump, guys : ) The tape is now on eBay - I don't have a VIC-20 and have no use for the original. Possibly I would get more for it if I didn't dump it first, but then think about all the other games I'd never experience if those owners hadn't released them...

I played both DoD VIC-20 and Magdarr C64 for comparison purposes. No question DoD was a precursor to the Magdarr games now.

I took a screenshot of the intro text of both DoD for the VIC-20 and Dungeon of Magdarr for the C64 (Dungeon of Death was also available for the C64 but remains elusive).

Text is identical! See:

Also, this table and chair graphic is used in the C64 Magdarr games.

Anybody up for a little debugging?

There's a problem at the start of line 196 in the main program. And obviously an issue when you try to open a door, but I haven't figured out what causes that yet.

Oh, yes I have now. Lines past 800 appear to get corrupted when loading the main game after loading the first part. The routine that involves opening the door calls a subroutine at line 800. It loads fine if you hard reset to load the main part of the game. If I try to change the line, the emulator crashes. Very odd...

I wonder if the person who bought the tape might be able to redump it. Or somehow we can fix it and recreate the tape properly heh...

Mayhem, given that Dungeons of Magdarr is an evolution of the same game, I wonder if there is anything that can be gleaned from the Commodore 64 version's code?

Not sure... it's compiled BASIC and has the usual disabling POKEs, so I can't see the listing.

Quest and DoD Manuals / PDF added to MOCAGH

Post by robinsonmason »

Great news - two DoD manuals and Quest (from TRS-80, but manuals are more or less the same) were recently added to the "new aquisitions" page at the Museum of Computer Adventure Gaming History:

(Note the thumbnails with PDF icons)

http://mocagh.org/loadpage.php?getgame=dungeonsofdeath

The manual could be helpful in any restoration effort(?).

Here is Quest, as well:

Hello everyone ! The link of the Dungeons of Death TAP (http://nwserver.webhop.org/_greg/d_of_d) seems broken... Does anyone has a copy of this tape image ?
Thank you,
bye!

When I try to attach the TAP in Vice i get "Cannot attach specified file" error - if i try to drag and drop it onto vice it loads and prints some colored jibberish in the bottom right of the screen, any thoughts?

EDIT

Was just a corrupt download - all good now :)
