Archiving old tapes

I’m currently archiving my old VIC-20 and C64 cassette tapes..

The C64 is easy.. Use Mtap to capture the original tape, and use my Action replay to create a PRG I can load onto SD2IEC

I want to do the same thing to the VIC tapes.. Mtap is fine.. But how do I convert a TAP to something I could use with SD2IEC. I believe there isn’t a freezer cart for a VIC. Does software exist?

You may try PRG Starter once it loads a tap file you may use Save As button to export a prg file, it works at least for single file programs, I don't know for multi-part programs.

For multi-part tape programs you need to use a bit of hacking to use them with SD2IEC or similar drives, check the link suggested by 6502dude and if you don't find a game just inform us.

There's a point of converting your own tapes, as it can be a different version of the software than the one that is already archived. If everyone simply downloads the ones already dumped - new versions will never be found.

Also - who knows if the ones that are already dumped are 100% working?

Yes this is true, I've nothing against new dump of course

Yes this is true too and I really appreciate people that just for fan or for preservation purpose dump their tape, I've dumped some tapes and I really know the patience required for a good work !

I'm hoping they add a record to .tap option on 1541 Ultimate II, that would be really nice. Currently using the PC running DOS is the only way to go unless you have a DC2N, right?

That is why we accept and store several dumps of each game/release.
We do this for both c64 and vic-20.

That is relativly easy, you run the tap through tapclean or other tool that will check the integrety of the tap file. For now there is not much support for non-cbm loaders for the vic-20, but it will be implemented as I go through my vic-20 collection.
