Hate to jump into these flames, but I thought this thread by Jeff was about getting info on a 1702 monitor ... ?

AFAIK, the 1702 monitor (at least mine) does not have RF nor S-Video input that would make it "perfect" for Jeff's needs.

So, why all this fuss about doing / not doing an S-Video mod for VIC 20? If you got a display that can use S-Video, hey, go for it. But IMHO, even though I have access to S-Video capable TVs, I really don't give a shit about VIC and S-Video. Here's a reality check: VIC's limited color capability, low resolution, and mono audio is primitive -- and until this thread, I have never heard anyone get this excited over its 176x184 resolution. You want a perfect VIC screen over S-Video? Use an emulator on an HD display.

Actually, the 1702 does have S-video. The S in S-video standards for separate and it refers to the luma and chroma being delivered separately (composite video is when they're combined). While the 1702 doesn't have a 4-pin 'S-video' connector, it does have luma and chroma inputs (on the rear) and that's S-video.

My VIC-20 with the S-video mod connected to a 1702's rear luma/chroma inputs displays an image that puts the composite image to shame. It's cliche to say but it really is something you have to see. I could take pictures to compare the difference but I doubt it would do the mod justice. It only takes a buck's worth of parts and a few minutes to do the mod. I highly recommend it.
In the end it will be as if nothing ever happened.

That's very useful information about coupling the S-Video mod to a 1702 in that manner -- I would never have imagined that would be possible.
I have a spare VIC; hmmm, sounds like a trip to Radio Shack this weekend. :)

While I can't say anything about the effect of the s-video mod on an NTSC VIC, on my PAL VIC it made the difference between some games being unplayable (VICToria Gold for example) because of some color combinations being unreadable, to having crystal-clear output. Take a look at the pictures of my VIC's screen in the Wiki article to see what I mean.
