Yup I did know that.

Also the Amiga 1084 monitor was provided by about three or four different manufacturers. It was sometimes totally different inside, although externally it remained the same.

Earlier this year I researched the 1702 monitor (c:a 1983) and found a lot of manufacturer names mentioned, both regarding only the tube and the whole monitor: Orion, Toshiba, Hitachi, Samsung, Thompson, Teknika, Amdek, Sakata, BMC and so on. I don't know who supplied tubes to the PET series, but I'm quite confident Commodore didn't manufacture tubes themselves? The same might be true about printer mechanisms. Regarding the disk drives, certainly the mechs are Tandon, Micropolis, Matsushita, Alps and so on while the logic boards were made by Commodore.

Sorry for getting a bit out of topic, I just want to put emphasis to my viewpoint that probably not even the 1510 monitor was a total inhouse Commodore product. It might also have been that way C= made a deal with one supplier who could not deliver or raised their prices, so they had to find another one when it was delivery time.

I read that the monitor cathode ray tube used for the original PET2001 was a Sony black and white TV. Since the original pet only had a 40 column display, the low resolution of a TV tube wasn't a problem.

Regarding the VIC-1510, I would really love to know whether any of these were sold to the public (and it would be even better if we could get a real high quality photograph of one).

A few years ago there was a mandate in Japan for old electronics to be
destroyed and celebrities like Ryuichi Sakamoto were trying to get classic
items (such as analogue synthesizers) protected or at least preserved. I
don't know too much details, but I've heard that some shops actually
destroyed old items or stopped selling them. Of course this would start
some sort of electronics underground. However, it seems to have been
repealed .. though, a VIC-1510 (made by anyone) still needs to surface.

That's exactly why I have mixed feelings about these new mandatory electronic recycling laws in Ontario. It's generally a good thing, but it will mean that a lot more old vintage computers get crushed for their metals.

Hey smj, how did you get those weird line breaks in your post? Just curious.

I think its just because I learned to type on a Teletype which didn't have
auto-line-wrap. Though fortunately pressing [RETURN] produced a <CR>
and an <LF>. But maybe I misunderstood you? ;-)

I'm resurrecting this old thread because I just found another ad with the 1510 monitor, with a medium resolution picture. I haven't seen it here or in the Wiki. The price matches with the one seen in the price list.
You have to click on the picture on that page, then click on the lower right link under the image to see the original size.

Direct link to the image, here it is:

THE. PERFECT. SETUP. (drooling  )

BTW, is there any known working Commodore VIC 1510 Monitor in this universe? Or are they confined in the parallel vaporware universe of my dreams?

Great find on that picture from Japan! I love the desk. I had thought that the only official Commodore computer desk was the brown one produced by Commodore Canada (which I have). I think I'll have to write up a wiki article on the desk(s).

I have found another VIC 1001 brochure.
It is more recent than the one linked before on the thread, for many reasons:
1) the price dropped from 69.800 to 49.800 yen
2) the rainbow VIC logo on the cover was created by Commodore UK for the VIC 20 launch
3) The 3K VIC-1210 expansion is gone
4) new datassette in place of the old PET style one
5) there's a list of games

One thing didn't change: the 1510 monitor is still there, so maybe it was available in Japan.

PS: I have contacted the owner of the page asking for a higher resolution, so please don't flood his email box with the same request!

Nice advertisement, but if you look closely, that isn't the same monitor as the 1510 (very close, but clearly a different model with no official Commodore 1510 markings on it).

By the way, I've thrown up a quick and dirty Wiki article on Commodore computer desks:

I don't mean the one on the cover, that's clearly another model: but on the internal pages, it looks the same 1510 to me. And it seems the source of the image that started this topic.
I wrote "ad" but the correct word should have been "brochure", my observations came from the last pages.

Can someone skilled in Japanese language roughly translate the monitor description in this image?
