Two official versions of ALIEN

Post by ral-clan »

Hi, I have two Alien cartridges by Commodore, and they both appear to be slightly different from one another.

The one "Made in Japan" starts up in Demo mode, then shows a black instruction screen with white letters & red direction keys.

The "Made in Hong Kong" version starts up with a white instruction screen with blue letters and no red direction buttons, then goes into demo mode.

Those are the only differences I've noticed. Has anyone else noticed this before?

Here are the dumps:

I've found another difference in the playfield on top, the japanese version says SC and HI while the other version says SCORE and displays the hi-score without label.

The istruction screen of the japanese version report the name fo the game "VIC SUPER ALIEN" and has different instruction content.

Do the label of the cartridges say Super Alien and Alien or both report Alien ?

Zimmers has the Hong-Kong version only (compared with yours) maybe the japanese version was the early version for the vic-1001 like Vic Rally-X

Interesting! I am pretty sure both labels say "Alien" but I will double check.

Good job on noticing the extra differences! I'm glad I dumped this.

Sounds similar to the slight variances between Jupiter Lander and Super Lander then...

Yes, even if differences are minimal we may consider it as a different version so someone should upload it on Zimmers too....

Same for night drive from your other post/dump, never seen before a rom image of this game but i'm sure i've seen it on ebay from german sellers, some german member may confirm ?
