VIC-1905 Pac Man - For Sale **Extremely Rare**

Post by ka20 »

I've listed a very hard-to-find VIC-1905 Pac Man cartridge for sale on eBay.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/kelseya/m.html? ... =12&_rdc=1

In 1981 Commodore obtained a license from Namco to release a home version of Pac Man. But the license only applied to Japan (Atari had the rights for the rest of the world). Commodore produced this excellent conversion that only sold in limited numbers in Japan since the Vic never sold well there. They tried renaming the game and selling it in the UK under the name Jelly Monsters, but Atari sued and it was eventually pulled from the market. This game, with the original Pac Man labeling is nearly impossible to find today, even in Japan. THIS IS NOT THE SAME GAME RELEASED BY ATARISOFT IN 1983.

I was lucky enough to obtain this from Japan about a year ago. Then earlier this year I obtained a second copy in a lot of Vic items purchased from Japan, so the only reason I'm parting with this is I don't have a need for two. I've started the bidding at around what it cost me to obtain this game last year (31,000 yen).

It was released in the UK and other places with the name "Jelly Monsters" but what you have there explains why the first ROM image I had in 1983 for that game was indeed called PAC MAN.

As you noted, Atarisoft released their own version of PAC MAN which was quite different and that was only in 1984, IIRC.

AFAIK, Jelly Monsters was released in 1981.

Any chance I can get you to dump the rom for this? (or does someone know if it is out there already?)

Thanks

It is the same game as Jelly Monsters, and the image for that ROM is widely available. Here is one location where you can find it:

Did you check if there is any difference at all between the ROM image of Jelly Monsters (V1, not fixed) and your VIC-1905 PAC MAN cartridge ?

Well that was a pretty good turnaround. Went for more than my budget currently allows. Maybe next time.

I was surprised by the price also. (Coincidentally, that's what my Dad paid for our family's C64 back in the fall of 1982 - $595 - although with inflation that was a lot more money back then). It seems prices for vintage computer and video games have been steadily headed upward over the last decade, although this is the most I've seen a VIC-20 game go for.

I'm certainly willing to dump the ROM from my copy. Can anyone point me to info on how to do that?

That's unfortunately difficult to do with autostart ROMs. Do you have a cart expander bus or some way to disable the /blk5 signal while the VIC is powering up?

If so I can help you get the cart dumped! :)
