You need an actual VIC.

Green monitor on VICE

Post by orion70 »

Didn't want to necromance this old post, so I wrote a new one instead :).

After fiddling a while with VICE VPL palette files, starting from a X64 green palette, I finally obtained a VIC palette which is quite satisfying, because I find it quite similar to my real monitor. It's a little darker to tell the truth, but everything is readable nonetheless, especially if you run VICE full screen and/or without scan lines.

Here are the values. You have to copy the whole thing into your default VPL file in the VIC20 subdir (backup it before of course):

Code: Select all

#
# VICE Palette file
#
# Syntax:
# Red Green Blue Dither
#

# Black
0c 14 00 F

# White
95 FF 00 F

# Red
36 5C 00 F

# Cyan
6E BD 00 F

# Purple
44 75 00 F

# Green
65 AD 00 F

# Blue
18 29 00 F

# Yellow
83 E0 00 F

# Orange
49 7D 00 F

# Light Orange
20 36 00 F

# Pink
61 A6 00 F

# Light Cyan
5B 9C 00 F

# Light Purple
2B 4A 00 F

# Light Green
8A ED 00 F

# Light Blue
53 8F 00 F

# Light Yellow
79 CF 00 F
And here's a collage of the resulting VICE view (click to zoom):

You know, I have a very retro-looking setup at home, and don't want to miss my green monitor too much when I'm at work :P.

You're right Majikeyric, using a green or amber monitor is quite a trauma at the beginning- but then, you relax and start feeling inside a 1980s movie :).
To give you an idea of my actual setup, here's a picture (click to zoom):

Image

VIC20 two-prong, 1981
Commodore original dust cover, 198?
C2N datassette, 1984
Commodore MPS 1200c color printer, 1986
1541-II disk drive, 1986
Sanyo "Data Display", excellent crisp green monitor, 1978

The monitor has no audio output, so the VIC speaks through a retro-looking Tivoli Radio (Model One)

To complete the setup, I added two restored leather chairs from my father-in-law's architecture study (1979), a tabletop lamp back from the same era, and a penholder with the shape of a tape cassette.

That's it :). Northern Europeans have a peculiar taste for retro.
