Gyro Gearloose made an amazing little switching regulator which replaces TO-3 format LM323/7805/7812 regulators.
It can be used in both the 2-prong VIC-20 or 1540/1541 disk drives.

Oh yes, I happen to have built three more recently. I never meant to mass-produce these. They work at 5 and 12 volts.
