Anyone diagnose a "poorly" Vic-1010?
Definitely thinking about selling the one I have. 200 GBP plus shipping. It's wired with a plug (see photos) but nothing to say you can't unwire the strange plug that was put on it. But I'll leave it on if someone in the UK takes it.

Re: Anyone after a Vic-1010?
I'll look into that. I presume you'd prefer to have me remove the plug and not send the adapter? Because naturally this lightens things a bit heh. I will also set it up and make sure the blimming thing works correctly too!
At this time, just looking to sell, I'm slimming down my whole videogame collection across computers and consoles, so unless it's something I have been looking for years to acquire (eg. any of the C64 or Vic20 cartridges I don't own), then cash only.

yes, the weird plug thing would not be needed
I am slimming down the collection too, just not in the VIC-20 area, that addiction is still alive and well

Re: Anyone diagnose a "poorly" Vic-1010?
Okay I set up everything and plugged it together. Red light comes on the Vic-1010 when powered which is reasonable sign.
So I tried a few cartridges in various slots. Games cartridges, and any normal utility cartridge is fine. However, any cartridge with memory expansion (official or third party), it just doesn't want to know and refuses to boot. Either get a blank screen or a load of garbage shown.
I have NO idea where to begin even diagnosing what might be wrong here. If anyone has any ideas, let me know!

Logic chips? There are two circuit boards in the Vic-1010, one for the cartridge slots, and one that seems to handle the power and a few other things. The former is easy to get to (having opened the device up), the latter is a frigging nightmare, secured under multiple layers of metal and screws. I'll see about taking a photo or two with the case lid off.

Well, what's the difference between a game cartridge and a memory expansion ? AFAIK, the R/W line...Mayhem wrote:So I tried a few cartridges in various slots. Please try Donkey Kong or Lunar Leeper as they use BLK1 which is also used by 8k and 16k RAM expansions.

UA2 - 74LS365
UA3 - 74LS245
UA4 - 74LS245
UA5 - 74LS245
UA6 - 74LS133
UA7 - 74LS00 (confirmed by Mayhem)
I wouldn't even bother. I would just replace them all. The LS133 is out of production but I have a source.Any way to test them ?

Re: Anyone diagnose a "poorly" Vic-1010?
Cheers for that Eslapion, I shall connect everything back up over the weekend and give Donkey Kong and Lunar Leeper a whirl (useful having pretty much any original cartridge to hand!). So if they don't boot then the R/W line is probably screwed?

My favourite place at present to get 7400 series chips from is Cricklewood Electronics in London:eslapion wrote:The LS133 is out of production but I have a source.

I ordered a batch of different 7400 chips nearly a year ago and they all came through quickly and are working fine. I'm also planning to order a 74LS133 fairly soon for another project, and plan to include a few other 7400 series chips that I'm considering I might need for my 6561-101 breadboard experiments.

Can you tell me what UA7 is by any chance?

Looks very similar to the Vic-1020 that has a 74LS00 according to the schematics. From the pictures it looks like a Fairchild 74LS00PC to be exact.eslapion wrote:@Mayhem

Always something going on... anyhow, I opened her up again. UA7 is indeed 74LS00PC on the chip.
Haven't had a chance to connect them all together again and try out DK or Lunar Leeper.
