Multi-color text on startup

Post by Naveed »

Working on a VIC-20 and need some help. I get multi colored text on startup. Please see pictures for more info. If any parts need to be swapped I can do that. I will have no issues de-soldering, just need to know where to start. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Welcome. Sounds very similar to the failure mrr19121970 reported recently.

It's likely to be be either the 2114 RAM chip used for the colour memory (UE1) or the 4066 that gates it into the VIC (UD1).

Personally I'd go for the 4066 1st, as it's cheaper to buy. Please be careful desoldering this one, I managed to rip 2 traces which annoyed me no end. Better snip this one rather than trying to extract whole.

I also updated the WIKI article for the pictorial troubleshooting guide
