sega controller compatable?

Post by R'zo »

I need a new joy stick for my vic. I would like to get one that's a little more sturdy than the classic Atari style joystick since I like to let my kids play on my vic with me
I remember using a sega genesis controller on my c=64 back when I was a kid.
Is there any reason wy a sega controller would not work with a vic?

I heard rumours that Sega controllers can break your C64/C16/VIC-20 and you should not use them.
But HW dudes can explain why.

Sega genesis controllers should be modded prior to using them with a VIC-20 or C64.

The C64 is a lot more vulnerable than the VIC-20 to this problem so R'zo, you were quite lucky.

it very much depends on what kind of controllers you are referring to... the classic A/B button mastersystem pads (no connection to pin7, ie completely passive) can be used without modding them - all other pads need modding. see here

Good to know. I'll shop around.

My 64 burned out on me after about 2 years, so maybe not so lucky. I got the 64 used in the mid 90s so it could have been from wear and tear.

This forum forum has possibly saved my vic a small hand full of times now. Thank you :)

I ended up going with the retro 2600 classic controller. My local retro gaming store didn't have any mega drive controllers in stock. All of their older Atari compatible controllers were well used and looked pretty beat up, most with loose parts rattling around inside.

I like the retro 2600 better than my old controller ( a WICO command controller.) It is smaller and lighter than the wico. It also has a nice click action on the joy stick that seems to help detour the need to force the stick when playing.
I am happy with it.

I am curious, I have an old wii nunchuck with a broken connector on it. I have often thought about seeing if it could be modified to work with my vic. Does anyone here happen to know if it would be possible? If so how difficult such a mod would be?

hmm...seems like that would be difficult. Those things are connected to a Wii controller that uses bluetooth. You would certainly need to do some wiring to the old joystick port...but even still, the nunchuck has an interesting pot and 2 extra buttons. You would need to good around with the voltage of the stick and also pick which button.
