I will try desoldering later. The IC seems to be very hard to come by, and might not be economically viable?

NOS 25 euro
Replacement 21 euro

anyone have a more economical source?

Update. Desoldered and put in working machine. Same issue. Confirmed char rom. Inserted working one and all good

Not used them, but this Italian seller on eBay has modern replacements

You can also build your own adapter board and program a 2732 EPROM using these

WRONG!

The 2732 is 24pins and is not compatible with this type of adapter. This adapter is for 2764 up to 27512 types of EPROMs.

I have a spare character generator ROM for the VIC-20, asking 9 Euros. Cheaper hum?

IMHO, yes. The color encoding in PAL can sometimes cause weird degradation of image quality when some color combinations are used.
