I regard the untested words of Ray Carlsen higher than any forum wise guy though...
PRG Starter - a VICE helper / Vic Software (Boray Gammon, SD2IEC music player, Vic Disk Menu, Tribbles, Mega Omega, How Many 8K etc.)

Ray is not an engineer but he has a few 18 wheelers worth of experience.

He made a substantial contribution of information to help make PLAnkton what it is.

BTW: I disagree with Lee's comment that 12Vdc is necessary. It is true that the peak voltage of 9Vac is 9*1.414=12.73Volts but the filter capacitor inside the VIC causes a smoothing down of that voltage.

Its possible, however, the datasette may not work properly with 9Vdc.
Be normal.

Just one last question. How much amps do I need ? In one post I read, that 250 mA is enough, others say it should be up to 3 A...

It should be 3A or more.

Don't use the your VIC 20!!!
In it the rectifier heat sink is MISSING, it's fated to blow up!
