Does anyone know how common these are? Would explain the VIC-1211A (always wondered about the 'A')

Maybe yes, but I really don't know. The look of this cart, and of the box as well, is quite different by what I remember as being the standard design of Commodore products. Perhaps it was produced for some local market only (Japan?).

Interesting item, though.

Yep, typically the blue "V" on a white background was used on early boxes of VIC hardware, including the VIC itself. I believe most stuff was made Japan, but maybe also some early Western product was packaged like that. I really didn't know there was a 1211 Super Expander without the 3K RAM! Very limited use, I guess.

How do you know it does not have 3K? Is this fact or assumption?

I saw no description of it running or tested?

More likely the "A" in the 1211A is a revision letter. Possibly they corrected a minor problem.

However, in spite the missing RAM the extended BASIC command set (hires graphic programming, music input helper, sound support) might helpful anyway. Not all language cartridges do have additional RAM. I couldn't proof it, but the following gives a certain indiction, that this is true.
See Description of a VIC-1211A

The 3 versions of this cart are discussed in a bit of detail on pages 124 to 127 of the Vic Visual History Book.
:D

That one is the very first and definitely without the 3K RAM.

Next is the 1211M,

then the 1211A
