Vic-20D case mod/hack

Post by yoyodyne »

Hello all,
I have an extra 128D (DCR) case that had the motherboard
removed. I was saving it for a case mod of some sort, when
I got to measuring a vic motherboard. I settled on the late model
vic, as its motherboard is slightly smaller, which helped in fitting
in the case. The DCR powersupply puts out 9vac, +5vdc and +12vdc,
The 12vdc will be a big help in powering a sid-20 mod to be added later.

This motherboard has an extra 24k added on board internally, I still
need to add bank select switches.

The keyboard was easy, pin-to-pin conversion from the 20 pin
strip connector to the 25pin d-sub. That way the keyboard is
completely un-altered. I still need to install a permament adapter
cord inside. Of course, the DCR keyboard has extra keys that
are not utilized on the vic-20. But I intend to find something to
do with the 40/80 column selector switch, it is not in the matrix, so
no decoding circuits are required.

I need to add holes to access the video and serial ports, and a slot
to insert carts. The joystick control port will install in an original
hole on the side of the case.

I also intend to add a logic board from a 1571 to get the built
in drive working. It will have an internal serial cord, so will work at
all times.

The screen shot is of the machine running off the internal DCR
power supply and 128d keyboard.

I'll post more when I have time to work on it.

Nice job. I always like to see cool case hacks. I'm currently fitting a VIC into a 64C case, but it's a no-brainer compared to yours.

I've got the motherboard mounted to the case, and modded
the openings to accept the vic connectors. I've also built
the permament keyboard cable, but still need to attach the
d-sub connector to the case.

Here's a picture of all the connectors installed:

I overlooked that there is a 2nd key that I can easily use, the
caps lock key on the top row. It also is not in the matrix, and
I will try to use that and the 40/80 column to enable/disable
the memory expansion, and maybe a 2nd kernal rom.

I will also add a cooling fan in the space that Commodore
intended to add one.

Wow, has it been 10 years?!? Sorry, I've been busy , but ran across my Vic-20D project last week in the closet, and got the bug to get it finished. At least functionally, anyway. Still some small details I want to add. I hope these photos work out, Snapfish changed their policy and I can't share photos anymore through their site, so I'll link to the ones I uploaded on Facebook.

The color on the monitor was jacked up, I fixed it in other pictures, but this shot was the most clear, so I went with it. I want to add some switches for the extra ram, JiffyDos would be nice, and I need to dress up the wires inside a bit. I'm going to use one of those old parallel printer/RS232 manual switch boxes to hook 1 keyboard to both this and my 128D, they will also share a monitor.

Now all you have to do is create a badge that says "commodore VIC-20D PERSONAL COMPUTER with the same font and same colors!
