I tried to let SargonII and Boss to play against eachother once, but even at a lower level I thought it took too long so I quit....

The Sargon series bragged about how superior they were - not only Sargon II on the VIC-20 but also Sargon III. To my knowledge, there are four traditional chess programs for the VIC:
Sargon II (cartridge), The Boss (+3K IIRC), Grandmaster (+8K) and Vic Chess (+8K).
Many years ago I played Grandmaster on the VIC-20 vs Grandmaster on the C64, at the same skill level of course. As far as I remember, they were equal, not surprising as the algorithm and hardware is close to identical.
In COMPUTE! there was a rather small chess program that I planned to convert into C and run on a modern computer, but I never got that far. The article mentioned alpha-beta pruning and various other techniques, but the program itself had a major flaw; its user interface would not be able to tell if the opponent (human) made an incorrect move or not. You could move any piece anywhere and the computer would accept it and try to find a valid countermove.
