VIC Game Club No. 11 – Paddle Games

Post by akator »

Paddles were a popular form of input in early arcade and home video games. The VIC library provides a good selection of paddle games and is very representative of the era.

If you don't have a real VIC with paddles to play these games on, activate paddle emulation in VICE by pressing ALT-Q to use a mouse/trackpad for paddle input.

The ZIP archive includes all 10 games. Omega Race, Pinball, and The Sky is Falling are in CRT cart format. The remaining 7 games are in PRG format.

My two paddle favorites are The Sky is Falling and Clowns.

Omega Race is one of my top favorite games ever, but not played with paddles.

I didn't have paddles for VIC as a kid. If there was a Sprint type of racing game for paddles, I surely would have invested in a pair. Omega Race with paddles sounds like a lot of fun. A modified version that justifies to the titular "race" part could have been the perfect game

I think I will focus on Clowns and Pinball Spectacular (on emulator) for this round.

I could not get the mouse for paddles to work. Too bad, because Pinball Spectacular seems really neat. Certainly like the next best thing to Pixel's upcoming Arukanoido :)

If you mean the game per se, it is paddle only anyhow. If you mean in emulation, then Alt Q I think makes your mouse act like a paddle in VICE.

I've tried to play Sea Wolf and Pinball Spectacular on Vice too, but also can't get Alt-Q to work. My mouse cursor disappears but I don't get control of the game. Neither clicking nor moving seem to affect anything.

I do own a pair of real paddles for my Vic but I've never gotten them to work propely either, I'm afraid. A great pity as paddle games are well-represented on the Vic and were such an important genre in the late 70s arcades.
