Submarine 1981 VIC-Soft

Post by ridgerunner »

hi folks,

just came across this video on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pQdcZPNOhM

The arcade version of this game was the first video game I ever played back in the late 70's. Pretty sure it was in black & white and had a big periscope on the cabinet. Anyone know the title of that arcade machine?

Was this a commercially released game for the VIC? It looks like a type-in perhaps?
would love to be able to play this on original hardware.

Best,
Chris

The arcade version you played was probably Midway’s Sea Wolf, or one of the clones. I used to play it as a kid on the boat between Malmö and Copenhagen every summer. :)

But there were lots of electromechanical torpedo games with periscope cabinets before Sea Wolf. Sega’s Periscope from 1966 is one notable predecessor, and already in 1946 Bally manufactured a coin-op with a periscope: Undersea Raider.

The Vic game looks like a type-in. But there must be commercial clones of Sea Wolf - I just can't think of one at the moment :?

Well Commodore itself did release a Sea Wolf conversion for the Vic20 and C64...

Right  and it's quite a good port too! Excellent sounds if not quite as atmospheric as the arcade sounds.
There is also Broderbund's Seafox, it is not a straight clone but very close. Still, Commodore's Sea Wolf is probably the best version available on the Vic.

It could be Sea Wolf or Wolf Pack arcade.

Have a look here at the cabinets to jog your memory

Thanks for all the info :) The arcade game was almost certainly Sea Wolf, thanks!
Will keep my eye's open for a VIC copy on ebay.
Just got a composite video cable to replace my RF, much nicer picture, no more ghosting.

All the best,
Chris
