a new Game for the VIC-20 Fort Apocalypse

Post by Aturnwald »

Hello together,

today I looked into a few cassette and found a lovely game for the VIC-20, Fort Apocalypse, it is a real good remake from the C64

here's the file https://www.dropbox.com/s/1kc9wvy5ar7xr ... 0.PRG?dl=0

all you need is. Super-Expander +3KB more memory. So enjoy it, oh by the way, I didn't write the game, but I'm sure it is under the GNU/License produced.

bye bye Toni

Hmm, first time I've seen a Super-Expander game.

The original version of VICtoria also required the Super Expander cartridge, before it was ported to MINIGRAFIK as VICtoria Deluxe and then VICtoria Gold. :)

That link appears to be for "Victoria Deluxe", is the Super-Expander version still available?

I'll dig my archive and see if it's still there. I remember me being so enthusiastic about Mike's minigrafik version, that I almost forgot it immediately :) .

right, I saw also some super-expander games, but all of them where crap, but this one is pretty nice and funny and it is a really good remake.

also here is the original link, where I've got the file, there is also a documentation of the owner, but it is in German.

www.videospielgeschichten.de/fortapocalypse2_2.html

so have fun at all.

Just a little question, is that possible to use the super-expander with more than the extra 3KB. I mean for e.g. 8 or 16 KB ? If yes, did that work on a real VIC-20, too ?

cheers Toni

I'm sure the MINIGRAFIK version is better, but I'm a bit nostalgic about the Super Expander (had one back in the day and tried [unsuccessfully] to make a few games with it).

Here's the original SE version of VICtoria.

I included a cartridge dump of SE, so in VICE, set the RAM config to BLK0 and BLK5 enabled, double click the file "SUPER EXPANDER" in the disk image requester (which will start with +3K for BASIC and load the cart. image into BLK5), Alt+R to autostart SE and then LOAD and RUN the file "VICTORIA".

Cheers,

Michael

Yes, that is possible, but then the +3K of the Super Expander cartridge are blocked from BASIC use. The same thing happens, when a regular +3K RAM expansion is used in a cartridge extender alongside a bigger RAM expansion.

With that configuration, when graphics are activated for the first time, the BASIC start is raised to $2001, the program is copied to that higher location and all variables are cleared.

I knew the super expander works well with up to 24k of extra ram but I didn't know what happened with the graphics memory and no idea the variables were cleared.

Good to know.

It seems like I learn something new about the VIC-20 every week from your posts.
Be normal.

cheers for all that information, now I understand, so for e.g. when I start to write the game. I use the super-expander and 24K, that works on all VICE and VIC,too. That should be OK, I hope ??!

is this also possible for e.g. when I have the main-program and during the game I reload some pictures in it, without lost of the main-program.
I mean can I use almost the same routine as on the C64? to load something into the computer, excepted the addresses that must be changed ?

Now, if someone can combine loading the Super Expander and the game into one self-booting disk image, I could add it to GB20 :)
