I like Postern's Snake Pit. Basically, you are a little smiley face, you eat eggs (circles), trying not to release snakes until you've eaten most of the eggs. When you eat the last egg, you can eat the snakes from the tail end. Simple single screen game for the unexpanded VIC; I think it was by Mike (Lords of Midnight) Singleton. There are versions on the C64 and Spectrum (and maybe BBC Micro too), but they are all quite hard due to the larger screen space having too many snakes.

I got it from the first computer show I went to, with my dad.

If you can get hold of it, Jelly Monsters, to see why Atari were so upset with Commodore's Pac-Man clone, especially if you compare it to their VCS version!

Bonzo is a neat little platformer; it's donkey's years since I played it, I seem to recall it's a bit frantic.

Star Battle, Commodore's Galaxian clone, is faithful to the arcade.

I'm not sure if this is all of Jeff (Llamasoft) Minter's VIC games, but they are freely available from here:

There is a great-looking modern Frogger clone, I don't know the name but I'm sure the senior members here will know which one I mean.

And echoing what others have said: Omega Race, Radar Rat Race, and Choplifter.
