Exploria

Post by 16KVIC20 »

I think the game exploria as presented here:

http://www.sleepingelephant.com/ipw-web ... 1&start=15

is a great game. It is exactly the type of thing that I had wanted to see on the VIC 20.
I have a similar game for the ZX Spectrum which is called W*H*B* and may be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZPBNMFIMGU

to see any game play you have to advance to about 5 min 20 sec.

It is great to have a VIC 20 version at last. Thank you Fresh Lamb.

Well I decided to buy the cassette version; it arrived today and looks very nicely made, complete with artwork and a proper label on the cassette.

I haven't had a chance to try it on the VIC 20 yet; probably some time next week I should think.

I had trouble understanding the actual gameplay from video.

You mean the gameplay for W*H*B*? I'll try to find the online emulator version for you.

Anyway: As for EXPLORIA:

The tape arrived looking very professional complete with artwork and printed label on the cassette. It loaded with no problems, although the occasional prompt to press the space bar for the next section to load would be perfection, but that was mostly me being a bit thick!

The game worked perfectly, and although I haven't got very far yet due to time, I can see that it is going to be a good game; I certainly recommend it.

The gameplay is that you have to move the man around the pathways displayed without falling too far or without bumping into the nasties that are in some rooms. For me I will have to learn a more sensitive approach, but I'm quite sure my boys will show me how to play it!

I say get it and give it a go!

EDIT: Jeff, the Online version of W*H*B* has been taken down by the looks of it, but you should get the idea of it from here:

http://www.bloxorz.org.uk/

W*H*B* was apparently based on Bloxorz and so is the ZX Spectrum version of that. Exploria is different, but has some similarities. It gives me some faith that a decent version of Bloxorz could be made for the VIC, especially with enough RAM expansion.

Glad you enjoy it. I was going to put up a Youtube video, but the flicker on my old TV was just too bad. If I get ambitious I will hook up a LCD and play for a while, unless of course someone else beats me to it.

Yes, it's a great game freshlamb. The VIC 20 is in its crate in our lounge (on holiday from the loft!) awaiting another go for a proper assessment with my two boys.

I thought the loading screen with your initials changing colour was a nice touch, not very often something we saw back in the 80s. Also the EXPLORIA title typeface was a nice touch too.

I certainly think I shall be buying some more of your games at some point. For all the convenience of SD2IEC and similar devices, I just love the old school C2N sometimes.

I have my VIC hooked up to an LED TV, but I'm not sure how I'd do a You Tube video. Could I film it on my iPad or DSLR and then upload that file?
The other issue is my gameplay may not be sufficiently good to get very far, so could be a very short file anyway! Perhaps if I practice first!

Thanks for posting that freshlamb, I had a look last night. I've never managed to get far in the game, but to be fair I haven't had the time to give it a really good go yet. Now I've seen that I have a bit more idea what I'm up against.

I recommend it to all those who want to try a new VIC 20 game that is something a bit different.
