Best of the best
When Vic-20 was a new and exciting computer there was a lot of clones of the big sellers at that time. Frogger, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Galaxians, Centipede etc. When you browse your Vic-20 collection you will find many clones of the same game.
Which of them are the best?
If you are about to post your personal opinion.

What do you mean? The Vic-20 computer is still new and exciting
Kind regards, Peter.

Not Atarisoft titles, but licensed arcade clones: Omega Race and Sea Wolf
IMO, Shamus and Berzerk-MMX are good candidates for replacement of #10 - Amok! (and Super Amok!)

Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.

Vic-20 isn't new...that's why Vic-20 is exciting.
(at least for a retrobuff like me)
Re: Best of the best
Shamus is a good game for both C64, Atari 800 and Vic 20, but more an good action game than a straight copy of Berzerk?rhurst wrote:Not Atarisoft titles, but licensed arcade clones: Omega Race and Sea Wolf

I like Amok so much because it's one of the best straight copies of Bezerk that i have ever tried. The control, the graphics and the layout is spot on. Both Omega Race and Sea Wolf is very competent games too i admit.
MS Pac-Man from Atarisoft could have been up on the list there too, even if it's a bit blocky.

Re: Best of the best
When i was younger i was a real techno freak. I bought just about every new console and computer...already looking forward to the next new big thing. I remember my very first games, the horrible loading times when the games was on tape. Then came the 16 bit computers and i was suddenly dealing with more things then just games. I was into midi, DTP, graphic editing and much more.
Then came the 32 bit consoles and i was among the first in Sweden to buy a brand new Playstation. Then it was Sega Saturn and...my last game console, Nintendo 64.
When XBOX end PS2 arrived i was kind of tired of the new games, it was all about polygons and follow up after follow up were released. The big genre of games i bought for my earlier computers was kind of gone, it was all about making money from now on. The games lost their humanity and there was only cold sterile lightshaded computerized polygons left.
All developers used the same hard and software to created the new games and nobody dared to try something new anymore. The making of cars went the same way and all cars was looking similar to each other.
NHL 2017 anyone?
Perhaps FIFA 2028?
Then i realised how much fun i had in the happy 8bit and 16bit era of gaming. And that's why "old" and "retro" is a positive word for me these days.
Todays PC isn't really a computer, it's a multimedia machine used for just about everything and most households of today use their PC as anything else in the household, a toaster, a micro owen or a mobile.

Many games would deserve extra-mentions, both old (Omega Race, Radar Rat Race, Battlezone, and MANY more) and new (Return to Fort Knox, Blue Star, YOHO Z Machine interpreter, why not VICtoria Gold, Pulse, Pooyan, Cometfall, Theater(s) of War and MANY more), so I wonder if these "best of the best" list have any significance at all .
Re: Best of the best
Thank you for posting your personal favourites.
Then i can notice how your list differs from my own and give your choices for best games an extra playtest. At least we shared some of the games on the list.

I always had a softspot for Jelly monsters [being my first ever vic cartridge] and still think it holds its own against recent offerings.05.Panicman (Bills442) sorry, Robert
Re: Best of the best
best arcade shooter for me would be Myriad by Rabbit

Agree, Myriad is fun to play and packed with action. Myriad has that magic touch that many games misses.beamrider wrote:best arcade shooter for me would be Myriad by Rabbit
Re: Best of the best
Jelly Monsters was one of my first games too in the 80's. Jelly Monsters is still a good game, up there with the best.

Re: Best of the best
Gorf is easier (slower) than Myriad, so I put it as a top arcade shooter.
