Avalon Hill games for the VIC (was: Avalon Hill's Nukewar)

Post by orion70 »

Hi there, being a fan of big carboard game packages with plenty of stuff inside :), I recently purchased a copy of MIB Nukewar for the VIC-20 +16K.
I also noticed that there were no wiki pages about AH products, so I created one for the company and one specifically for the game.
Will deepen my knowledge of the game mechanics as soon as I have some more spare time

Funny, the Wikipedia article mentions nothing about computer or video games:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalon_Hill

I myself don't remember the Avalon Hill computer games. Maybe someone should add a section to the Wikipedia article about A.H.'s software division.

Well, there are a couple of lines about their computer games in the wikipedia entry:
Avalon Hill became an early publisher of computer games in 1980, adapting some of its boardgame titles to various computer platforms (TRS-80, Vic-20, Commodore 64, Apple II, etc.) on several data formats (cassette tape and 5¼" disk). Sales of these products were decent, but the only outstanding success was Achtung Spitfire!, published relatively late in the company history.

Wiki entres for Avalon Hill COMPLETED. Some lack of descriptions and/or rules, some have poor quality depictions of game boxes, but I am overall satisfied with the result :).

They released Atari 2600 games as well (I have most of them), but I believe they were more obscure than their computer game releases.

Didn't know that! I've made a little googling, and found a rarity list here (prices in US$, NTSC version):

Code: Select all

Title Year Rarity NIB CIB LOOSE

Shuttle Orbiter 1983 69% 411.00 198.00 60.00
Wall Ball 1983 74% 300.00 120.00 31.00
Out of Control 1983 94% 2600.00 1000.00 350.00
Death Trap 1983 63% 485.00 195.00 65.00
London Blitz 1983 67% 194.00 98.00 32.00
Seems like they're not the same titles as the VIC - obviously they're arcades instead of text strategy. Can you confirm the list is complete?
Also, their rarity implies they're VERY expensive!

Yes, that list is complete, and they are all action/arcade-style games.

Death Trap, Out of Control and Shuttle Orbiter are Atari 2600 originals that are unique to that platform.

London Blitz was developed for the 2600, but was also ported to the Commodore 64 as well.

Wall Ball was a 2600 conversion of a game called Breakthru, which was originally released on the TRS-80. As with London Blitz, it was ported to the Commodore 64.

They're fairly uncommon and not particularly cheap, although not necessarily as expensive as the figures given above. The site those figures came from is a joke. This guide is more accurate.

Good job on the Wiki entry.

I wish Avalon Hill had made a version of Telengard for the VIC-20. I think Telengard would be an ideal candidate for a VIC-20 port - as the C64 graphics are not that complex, and it is a classic and popular game!

I would be ESTATIC <grin>. The C64 port is my favorite version.
As for ports of AH board games, I would have loved to see a Squad Leader or Magic Realm computer game.

Telengard is maybe my favorite C64 game. A VIC version would be oh so nice.

I too have a fondness for the Avalon Hill games (mostly for the classic bookshelf boxes, much like the SSI stuff) and have a large collection of them for a surprising range of platforms. Nice to see others having a similar appreciation.
