VIC-20 on your PSP! Er, sort of.

Post by ArugulaZ »

By now I'm sure most of you have heard about the emulators designed to run on your PSP without any hardware modifications. If not, you can find more information about them here:

http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/

Currently, there are no emulators for the PSP written specifically to play VIC-20 games... the only Commodore computer the system can currently emulate is the Amiga, and even that's a little rough.

However, you can get a taste of VIC-20 goodness while on the go. First, install the Turbografx-16 emulator PCEP onto your PSP. If you need instructions on how to install this software, you can find it on this site:

http://grblitz.overclocked.org

Once you're done, go to a ROM site like Planet Emulation (http://www.planetemu.net), visit the Turbografx-16 or PC Engine section of that site, and download the file "15-in-1 Mega Collection". Put this file on your PSP in the same folder as the emulator you installed, then run the emulator and select the game.

You'll be given a choice of fifteen different VIC-20 games, ranging from Sargon Chess (renamed Chess II here, but otherwise identical) to fan favorite Gridrunner. The sound is a little hard on the ears; for some reason, the emulator doesn't handle it well. Fortunately, the games play just as well as they did on the real system.

I still wonder how much emulator/simulator the Turbo Grafix/PC Engine game pack is, and how much it was programmed directly towards the target machine in a look'n'feel like VIC-20. I downloaded the files before, but I haven't got time to check the contents if the games consist of 6502 assembly in a cartridge image layout. That should give a definitive answer.
