Baldor's Castle
Hey guys, reading scans of old magazines makes me wonder about the preservation status of the rarest games. After having successfully rescued Victrek from oblivion thanks to Ral-clan, I'd like to point your attention to the absence of documentation of Baldor's Castle.
Baldor's Castle is a 2D dungeon game similar to the Temple of Apshai (from what I can see), and it's already downloadable in Zimmers. It's one the few carts using 12K in BLK1+BLK2, starting with a SYS (20182), as noted in a previous thread about carts hardware. It's also included in the Mega-Cart.
First of all, here's the announcement of the cartridge commercialization, proving that it wasn't an homemade thing:
Now, looks promising, but I can't figure out how to play. Anyone has ever seen the real cartridge, or has at least its instructions?

Mega-Cart: the ultimate cartridge for your Commodore Vic-20

Mega-Cart: the cartridge you plug in once and for all.
I have this advertisement from Arfon. No idea where I got this, but it has some information on their other titles.
Sadly, it seems the obscure business software that is more likely to be lost forever than the games (there's not much of a retro scene for using archaic wordprocessors or spreadsheets).

Action RPG
I got my Mega Cart recently and enjoyed playing this. I love this sort of game. It's sort of like a very early Gateway to Apshai action adventure, but lovably retro.
Gameplay seems simple but it would be great to have the flavor from the documentation. Getting the docs and original cart would be fantastic. If anyone can score it, perhaps MOCAGH can.
Couple of things I figured out:
1. Hit fire and move joystick to fire an arrow. Timing this right will kill monsters before they get to you (this reminded me of both Gateway and Temple of Apshai). You'll want to do this frequently, but don't waste arrows by pushing in a direction when a monster is on top of you, it will only fire off into air.
2. Hit fire while monsters are on you. If you get swamped, don't worry, you may be able to land a few good hits and get out alive.
3. Hit "P" for potion to restore health if you can find one.
I assume other abilities are tied like "P" for Potion to a letter on the keyboard. Didn't get to play much last night.

Hi Orion, sorry for the thread res, but do you still have the advert image mentioned in the first post? I'd like it for archival purposes.

Sorry, it's one of the few files I didn't move from the old server. Frankly, I can't even remember its appearance, or the source (maybe scans of an old magazine?). Sorry for that.

Re: Baldor's Castle
Howard Feldman at MOCAGH said he also does not have any docs but helped find this below -- now to track down RUN Magazine...!
GAME NAME: Baldor's Castle
COMPANY : Daedalus Digital
AUTHOR : Martin Kennedy (1983)
GAME TYPE: Dungeon style adventure game.
REQUIRED : 16k RAM (8k each in banks 1 & 2). Type SYS 20182 to start.
GRAPHICS : Good. A bit plain in places, but good enough to do the job.
SOUND : Average to good. Just the usual sound effects, but done OK.
GAMEPLAY : Depends on whether you (A) can figure it out without the original
instructions, and (B) whether you even like dungeon-type games.
OVERALL : See gameplay, and decide for yourself.
REVIEW : "Arfon Micro (111 Rena Drive, Suite C, Lafayette, LA 70503) has
released a new game for the Vic-20. Baldor's Castle challenges
you to fight off the monsters with your bare hands (if you are
able) or with bow and arrow, magic sword, potions and more. The
castle contains more than 70 rooms on three levels. It is
available on cartridge and sells for $29.95." (Seen on page 146
of Run magazine, Jan 1984 / premiere issue.)
TRIVIA : Largely written in BASIC, with some machine language routines.
The location of the game was also unusual for a cartridge, though
not unusual for a game written in Basic. The author apparently
just copied the image from his 16k RAM expander's memory area to
that same memory area on an (EP)ROM cartridge format. Only this
game and the Scott Adams games require a SYS number to start and
both because they sit in the area normally used by Basic programs.
COMMENTS : If you're running this program via a Vic20 software emulator, try
setting your RAM expansion memory to 16k. This program starts at
memory address $2000 if your emulator asks for that information.
After it is loaded into memory, type the SYS 20182 code to start.

Re: Baldor's Castle
That review says tape not cartridge, so maybe it never came out on that format. Who knows, unless someone finds a copy?!
