I consolidated a list of games earlier in this thread. Would be good if someone could turn it into a voting page.

Here're my wild dreams for the unexpanded VIC. Unthinkable but doable. ;)

* Filled-polygon polycolor tank game.
* Jump'n run like those brothers and sisters, loading from tape in the background.
* Pulse II also loading from tape just in time, with music and speech.

Let the hacking get out of contr... ermh... commence! 8)

I'd like to see DOGE2048: http://doge2048.com/

It's a simple puzzle game played on a 4x4 grid, involving matching pairs of tiles by sliding them around. Essentially, the tiles slide as if you were tilting the board.

On an NTSC VIC, you get nearly square tiles by making them 3x5 chars (3 chars horizontally, 5 chars vertically). To conserve memory, a lot of the chars can be shared (with variations in color). A lot of animation can be done just by flipping a single char, such as winking.

Beyond HE'S Protector, was there any other good (or better) Defender video game made? There are a few good Scramble style games, but I am looking for the two-way scroller fast - blaster action.

There was Defender on cartridge by Atarisoft which I played Las the week which is ok.

The very best in my opinion is Star Defence aka Star Defender by Anirog16k cassette.

There was also Andes Attack by Jeff Minter of Llamasoft aka Aggressor released in USA by Hes (not so good speed and scrolling)

Thanks, I will have to hunt down Star Defence aka Star Defender by Anirog16k (off GameBase20 likely) as the other attempts are pretty weak imitations. I've got to believe a quality Defender clone is possible on VIC.

Star Defence is pretty good with Smart Bombs, Hyperspace and Invisibility. Expanded screen and large 'Sprites'

Also there is a 2 speed option Normal and Manic.

I think this is accessed by pressing F5 of F7 - you will hear a tone, press it again and you hear another tone. That is the only way to know you have changed speed setting.

No indications on the limited title screen "One" [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]

Think I remember it has a 2 player mode on F3.

Be sure to try blowing up the planet and beat the mutants for 4 waves and try the Yllabian Dogfight on Wave 5 (just ufo's).

Try and get to Firebomber Showdown on wave 10. They never show up?! I don't know if this was supposed to be a wave or if it is a bug or the lack of remaining bytes free to implement it.

I don't think I ever made it to wave 15....need a trained version to see ;-)

This and Laserzone have some fantastic sounds. One of my Retro Go To games.

I love the colour cycling and sound when spraying laser while moving up and down.

I wonder who wrote it. I think it is a great highly playable Vic 20 game.

Yes, I also believe a really good version of defender should be possible on the Vic-20.
Check out Stargate aka Defender 2 on the Atari 2600 for example, that game is very good.
I guess you all know how limited the Atari 2600 is compared to a Vic-20.

Star defence looks worse than the Atarisoft offering to me. The only think I thought that was wrong with it <Atarisoft> was the jumpy scrolling.

For that matter I haven't seen a decent Scramble clone on the Vic-20 either due to the diffculty of implementing smooth scrolling.

You have to play it on both low and high speed.

It is more fun than the Atari version IMNSHO ;-)

Is there a game like Bitless? It's a one-button platform puzzler where your sprite constantly runs and will reverse direction when hitting a wall. Your only control is a jump button, with an option to hold it for longer jumps and an ability to jump off of walls.

That really looks like a VIC game - especially with all the solid colours and the kind of stepped way the tanks move.

I ran across a puzzle game on the internet that seems like it would be an easy conversion to the Vic 20 called Ninja Twins.

"willingness" or compromise? I always thought they took what they could get when competing against other companies. It seemed like all a company needed was to say that a game was "in the arcades" (like saying "seen on tv") even if the title were not popular in the arcades.

Paying programmers to port games must also be cheaper than developing something original and hiring a legal team to make sure no one could sue for similarities to existing games.
I suppose it depends.. John Harris ported Frogger for the Atari 8-bit and made out quite nicely (it was not so cheap for Sierra Online). As far as the ports vs compromise, on the Coleco I'd say there was some of both: Donkey Kong.. a win.. Cosmic Avenger.. meh (compromise; they needed a scroller).. I like it but Scramble and Super Cobra on other platforms best it.. LadyBug on the other hand IMO destroys Pac-Man.
