Re: Games we want to see
I don't remember if I (or anyone else) requested this, but:
Toy Bizarre
Toy Bizarre was a really trippy Mario Brothers clone, except...well it was much more than just a clone. I'd almost say it was closer to Joust than Mario Brothers. The gameplay elements of Toy Bizarre really gave it a tactical richness that was lacking in Mario Brothers, and the spooky style and mesmerizingly jerky toy motion gave it a stunning atmospheric feel.
I think a Vic20 conversion could work well, because it was really the rhythm of the motion that really gave the game its particular feel. The lower resolution of Vic20 multicolor graphics would mean blockier graphics, but I think it would hold up.
But you know what would be even cooler than Toy Bizarre?
Super Toy Bizarre
This game only exists as a vague idea in my head...but basically, what if you made a Super Mario Brothers style side scroller from Toy Bizarre sprites and gameplay? Instead of smoothly moving enemies, Super Toy Bizarre would have wind up toys with halting jerky motion. Instead of bopping enemies from below, you would stomp on paired platform switches (and watch out for enemy toys doing the same to you!).

OT: LOVED TOY BIZARRE on C64. Can't imagine a VIC version doing it any justice, tho, just throwing out the GAUNTLET for someone.

Re: Games we want to see
how about a sierra style adventure game, now it will have to be scaled down for the vic but i think it could work
Re: Games we want to see
I'd love to see a version of r type or gradius attempted on to Vic. The less will known x multiply is also a game which could translate well. Not having programmed for a good few years it's probably beyond me now, but would be great if some one to up the challenge.
Re: Games we want to see
I think r-type would be asking a bit much of the friendly computer - but more than happy for someone to prove me wrong...
Re: Games we want to see
Is that the sound of a gauntlet being thrown.?
Re: Games we want to see
Maybe we should set up a poll for Arcade games people would like to be ported if anyone knows how...
Trawling this thread I've identified the following candidates.
[Fairly easy]
Tank Battalion
Astrofire
Starship 1?
[More Challenging]
BoulderDash
Wizard of Wor
Pengo
Mr Do
Donkey Kong Jr
Telengard
Vanguard
Joust
Q-Bert (decent version)
Popeye
Lady Bug
Moon Cresta
[Very Challenging]
Bomb Jack
1942
Phoenix
Le-Mans
Spy Hunter
Arkanoid
Gyruss?
Space Harrier?
Galaga?
r-type?
Super Mario Bros?
Puzzle-Bobble?
Xevious
Zaxxon
[edit 22/1/2014]
Loadrunner removed
SuperMario added as discovered it's an Arcade game too and has been mentioned
Puzzle Bobble added as maybe doable [don't even think there's a C64 version]

Re: Games we want to see
i have game concept, it called VIC-Quest and the game is in the same vein as the sierra quest games (kings & space).
now i have an idea for the UI and controls for the game but it needs some people who are experience in making games for the vic-20 to fully flesh it out also here is my blueprint for the UI and controls and i like to know what you guys think
if using f1,3,5,7 keys is not possible, we could do what KQ1 did and use text commands for use item ,interact, talk and inventory but other then that, i don't any alternative methods of controlling the game and i don't see using the joystick as a mouse working

Re: Games we want to see
Just putting in another vote for a TELENGARD port for the VIC-20. I think the VIC-20 could handle it. I also just found online a version of it for the Commodore PET:
http://archeogaming.blogspot.ca/2013/01 ... erved.html
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6aZNPb ... edit?pli=1
Perhaps the PET version would be even easier to port than the C64 version (as the PET version uses no sprites or music).
It plays very well on the PET - maybe slightly faster than the C64 version but seems to have the exact same maze.
Even if not made into a VIC-20 adaptation, perhaps just a straight PET "emu" port like with the green-on-black releases from a few years ago.
Playing Telengard on the VIC-20 would be a surreal experience! C'mon, Avalon Hill made a version for the PET, skipped the VIC, then made a version for the C64! What an injustice!

Re: Games we want to see
I must say I tried this game in the first place back when I was porting stuff from the PET, but I had problems with its POKE and PEEK statements, mainly because of my ignorance. I'm afraid this is a serious task, which may be solved only by a skilled programmer
