Who owns it now anyhows? It was a Stern arcade machine... I guess given it is still in existence then it probably still does.

Yeah, Stern still holds the rights to it. There's a thread over at Lemon discussing Martin Piper's version of the game. He's trying to get permission for an official release although it seems to have gone a little quiet on that front.

I mentioned the possibility of porting that version over to the Vic but nobody's responded yet. :)

I'd like to see a Monty sequel on the Vic. I made a Monty in minipaint:

Well, I got a response from Martin regarding the porting of Bezerk Redux to the Vic. Unfortunately, he doesn't intend to do a port himself but he has given a link to the source code and doesn't mind if anyone else wants to take on the challenge:

http://codebase64.org/doku.php?id=base:berzerk_redux

So, that means we have the graphics done and a big lump of source. As I am inept I have no idea what to do with this but I'm sure one of you talented bunch could have a look... :)

I believe the term "sprites" means a VIC version would need to utilize Robert Hurst's or someone else's sprite library. That is probably a good thing, the more games using the library the more pecularities will be discovered even if it tends to lead to dozens of releases of the same game as bugs are fixed... :-P

Wow, just played it, what a nice redux ... I don't think VIC can produce that kind of quality 'voice', though.

It is pretty good isn't it? Are you up to the challenge?! Go on, you know you want to! :P

The voice quality is really cool, it's like going back to 1984 and playing a game from the 'future' in some sci-fi programme. :)

I don't know how much I am going to buy-in to this "challenge", but it is a fun game. The game is all about the voices, ala, INTRUDER ALERT!! and the likes. So unless those samples can be integrated, the C64 Berzerk Redux stuff referenced is fairly useless for a VIC port.

So for giggles, I tried to to match the graphics exactly as they are used in the original Stern arcade game, using the MAME pause - advance frame feature. As a starting point only, get it here and you decide if it warrants completing: with or without the speech samples.

Use a joystick to move around; press STOP to reset; or F1 to exit.

Well, you know what I'm going to say: "go for it!". I realise there is no interaction and no baddies but the speed is great and feels responsive enough to feel like a game in the making (if that makes sense...). Also, I think Jeff will be pretty chuffed to see this... :)

Learned a new word today, chuffed! :)

After reading up on some Berzerk history, i.e., first tested in a Chicago singles bar and where did evil otto name come from, etc., I learned that people were snuffed by playing... I will need to have a health warning / agreement before entering the game!

What kind of game should I make tonight? Someone give me an idea! I'll make it. (...assuming I have the skills to do so.)
