VIC Font?

Post by srowe »

I'm looking for a TrueType font to use in some documentation, there was a thread in 2008

http://sleepingelephant.com/ipw-web/bul ... php?t=2761

but I don't seem to be able to find a download. I started using Pet Me X2 until I realized it doesn't actually have Commodore glyphs.

Odd, I just recently downloaded PetMe by Rebecca Bettencourt and it has every font symbol you could wish for.
Perhaps you got a fake?
Try getting them from here:
http://www.kreativekorp.com/software/fonts/index.shtml
PetMe has standard square characters and PetMe2x has double width characters.
Open them up in Character Map and you'll see they have hundreds of glyphs.

Ah, I wasn't looking properly. Everything I want is in Other, Private Use Area (at least that's where it's to be found on Linux).

How annoying, LibreOffice doesn't seem to render this set of glyphs at all. They're fine in other applications though.

Amusing font set, but it seems to me that once again the VIC characters have wrong proportions. The "40columns" are (obviously) too narrow, but in turn the "20columns" look a bit too large IMHO.

I think I remember reading somewhere that emulators like VICE don't have the correct screen proportions, and as a result the characters are more "flat" than on a hardware VIC20. Should this be true, I wonder if these fonts have been created by sampling the charset using characters displayed on screen by VICE.

With newer VICE incarnations, you can easily adjust the aspect ratio to better fit your needs, and respect the original values (see HERE). These characters were sampled from an incorrect ratio IMO.

Exactly, that's most probably the thread where my sentiments about this issue were first confirmed by figures! Thanks for linking!

As a side note, I believe the character ratio of these fonts can be adjusted on Microsoft Word by going to the CHARACTER menu, SPACING AND POSITION tab, and by typing into the PROPORTION % field an appropriate figure (by trial & error  ).

These are generated from Pet (hence "Pet Me") and C64 ROM images, I believe. No sampling or scaling (well, except the 20/80 column versions).
I would rather it this way, because as you point out, you can just scale the text to your heart's desire.
