Funet FTP down?

Post by Jeff-20 »

When was the last time you down loaded from Funet?

I didn't notice because the directory is up, but it seems that many of the files are no longer available. The unexpanded game folder only has 20% of the files listed in the original directory:

I went there just now (using the web interface http://www.funet.fi/pub/cbm/vic20) and tried downloading a few files. No problem.

DId you notice how many files are missing?

http://www.funet.fi/pub/cbm/vic20/games ... index.html

most of the games are now gone in this list! What happened?

Does it have anything to do with this:
roms/
ROM images of cartridge games and programming tools. The collection was taken down because of a request from the Interactive Digital Software Association http://www.idsa.com/. See carts/index.html for freely distributable cartridge images.
I noticed some of the programs from Compute Magazine are gone as well as some of the cbm games.

Actually, the letter only mentioned a handfull (less than five) titles, but Marko decided to take offline (not remove!) all of the commercial and supposedly commercial titles to later put them back after getting some permits in the cases it is possible to track down the author.

Maybe a private person would not take such measures, but given the dignity of the host (Funet is the main university coordination facility in Finland IIUC), I can understand if one is cautious instead of risking getting into more trouble later. I'm sure that if anyone else with "less respect" and is a little brave offers to host whole or parts of the Funet archive, it is possible to transfer the contents.

Now that I have a working xe1541 cable, I thought I might archive all of the files to a CD just in case. Am I too late? DOes anyone else have them?

I downloaded a ton of them, about six months or so.

I will write out the titles of the ones I have, for you.

Well, I don't think it is really such a bad thing... thanks.

It seems that everyone saves the plug-in carts. I saw a bunch of old type-in programs on the FTP original list which are no longer there... for example, BUNNY HOP (an type-in basic program for the unexpanded vic).

We should make a CD like the C64 guys have made... just compile every vic program and rom to one CD and then make the image available. I'd love to have it all in one place.

I just wish I had the forsight to do it earlier!
