Here is a project, which is a spin-off of a C64 project I've been working on for a while, that allows you to control the sounds of the VIC-20 with the Koalapad. For unexpanded machines.

I am not a musician, so I don't know if this can be used as a true instrument, or if it's just a neat sound toy, but I have seen my C64 version (watch for it soon!) used to play along with SID tunes successfully.
Alas I have not been able to play with it on real HW, so I don't know if the jitter will make it useless (or make it awesome!), but hopefully I can get some feedback. The relatively recent versions of VICE (2.4+) have koalapad emulation, but with vanilla 2.4, you can fake it with paddle emulation if you have to.
Source included, comments appreciated.

Re: Koalamin 20
Oh, very interesting! I will try it out.
But will it play the theme song from Dark Shadows?
