Best way to get online?

Post by retromodder »

So since the comet64 is currently not being produced, whats the best way to get online? Ive seen several homebrew ways to get this done, but im certainly no expert. Im just a noob with time on his hands and an urge to build and see just what i can make my Vic-20 do :)

So what would be the best way for a novice like me to get my classic online?

VIC-20 set-up, Commodore modem, term program, and a shell account on a dial-up ISP (like Iglou.com).

The combination of an EZ232 and Lantronix UDS-10 also works pretty well, though it's fairly complicated to set up.

In theory my Commodore Wi-Fi Modem should work fine on a VIC, I'll have to test it.

I use a Strikelink userport to usb null modem cable. I have a program called tcpser running on a pc which allows you to telnet out. You can build your own following the directions here:

https://1200baud.wordpress.com/2012/10/ ... s-than-15/

I'd be happy to build one for you for $25. I have the parts at home for our Commodore group here in Victoria, Canada. Here is a link to a picture of one I built:

I've also been working on a basic terminal program for the unexpanded vic which I'm almost ready to put out in the wild. More on that soon :)

Thank you for your help everyone.

Alterus, This looks like an easy build and after watching a few youtube videos about Telnet, im impressed, it looks fun. I will definitely be building this in the near future. Thank you for the info.

Good to hear! Yes, I've been very happy with the Strikelink cable I built. You can do a 9600 baud mod to it for the C64 and use the Striketerm program. For the Vic20, you can just stick with the standard build for 2400 baud. Will you be using an unexpanded Vic or do you have a ram expansion? Like I said before, I'm working on a telnet program for the unexpanded Vic that I use to call BBSs with. Works well enough...

A terminal program is great news.

I guess most of us got at least 16 kb expansion.
Kind regards, Peter.

My Vic-20 has a 32k selectable ram expansion in it.

It looks like i can build this strikelink cable with this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/221802586751?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

and the user port

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Commodore-User- ... 5d4fb62fbb

It should have a very clean look to it when built :)
