New Vic20 Portable

Post by Vic20-Ian »

An excessive retro habit?

If you haven't heard of Pandora then look here and on youtube but be prepared to take a hit on the bank balance!

http://www.openpandora.org/

It is a few years later than planned and lots of heartache along the way but this little Linux based machine with full keyboard, 10hr battery life, tv out, game controls (x pad and 2 analogue nubs) is a wonder to behold.

After having had a GP32 and a GP2X I lurked for a long time watching Pandora. I didn't pre order as a lot of these things do end up as vapourware.

Recently they launched a premium version for folks to pay a little more and get a machine in under 7 days. I considered this carefully before jumping in as lots of folks feel this "queue jumping" is unfair. however, the reality is that the extra fee is keeping the company alive so that the loss making pre orders can be fulfilled.

A few weeks back I was in Germany less than an hours drive from Ingolstadt so I met up with EvilDragon one of the co creators of Pandora and invited him to dinner.

A short while later and my bank account lighter I have a portable Vic20, C64, Amiga, Mame, N64, etc.

Not to mention it being a full pc running Angstrom with minimenu or XFCE.

I have to say this is an awesome device.

The Vice emulator is great - Star Defence on a handheld!.

Amiga is very good, Super Mario 64 fully playable.

Well worth a look for those who travel a lot.

Highly recommended.

Is the screen back lit or front lit?

Just got mine last week. This beauty is the ultimate portable Vic20. (And emulates about a dozen other systems too, among other things). Just finished an amazing game of Omega Race, and before that was using Logmein on the Pandora to remotely control my windows 7 machine!

Fantastic game controls as well. It's a dream device for the emulation crowd.

Oh and it does have a backlit screen. (touchscreen!)

Yes, touch screen is pressure sensitive too - the artist program is great, you can sketch lightly or heavily with different pencils.

Some folks are emulating Atari ST and running cubase and controlling synths,

I just need to get my FE3 and megacart images installed!

A little off topic I know, but I haven't been able to find a FE3 image. I found the megacart image OK though. Can anyone point me to where I can find a FE3 image??

I think you need the firmware:

Mega-Cart: the cartridge you plug in once and for all.

Yes, the firmware is an empty image.

You can configure your virtual FE3 in VICE and allow save to image by option. After this you have a 512KB big file which is your personal image including all games and tools you want.
